[Ecclesiastes 1]
1:1C The words1697 of the Preacher,6953 the son1121 of David,1732 king4428 in Jerusalem.
1:2C Vanity1892 of vanities,1892 saith559 the Preacher,6953 vanity1892 of vanities;1892 all [is] vanity.
1:3C What profit3504 hath a man120 of all his labour5999 which he taketh5998 under the sun?
1:4C [One] generation1755 passeth away,1980 and [another] generation1755 cometh:935935 but the earth776 abideth5975 for ever.
1:5 The sun8121 also ariseth,2224 and the sun8121 goeth down,935 and hasteth7602 to his place4725 where he arose.
1:6 The wind7307 goeth1980 toward the south,1864 and turneth about5437 unto the north;6828 it whirleth about continually,1980 and the wind7307 returneth again7725 according to his circuits.
1:7C All the rivers5158 run1980 into the sea;3220 yet the sea3220 [is] not full;4392 unto the place4725 from whence the rivers5158 come,1980 thither they return7725 again.
1:8 All things1697 [are] full of labour;3023 man376 cannot3201 utter1696 [it]: the eye5869 is not satisfied7646 with seeing,7200 nor the ear241 filled4390 with hearing.
1:9 The thing that hath been, it [is that] which shall be; and that which is done6213 [is] that which shall be done:6213 and [there is] no new2319 [thing] under the sun.
1:10 Is there3426 [any] thing1697 whereof it may be said,559 See,7200 this [is] new?2319 it hath been already3528 of old time,5769 which was before
1:11 [There is] no remembrance2146 of former7223 [things]; neither shall there be [any] remembrance2146 of [things] that are to come314 with [those] that shall come after.
1:12 I the Preacher6953 was king4428 over Israel3478 in Jerusalem.
1:13C And I gave5414 my heart3820 to seek1875 and search out8446 by wisdom2451 concerning all [things] that are done6213 under heaven:8064 this sore7451 travail6045 hath God430 given5414 to the sons1121 of man120 to be exercised
1:14 I have seen7200 all the works4639 that are done6213 under the sun;8121 and, behold, all [is] vanity1892 and vexation7469 of spirit.
1:15 [That which is] crooked5791 cannot3201 be made straight:8626 and that which is wanting2642 cannot3201 be numbered.
1:16 I communed1696 with mine own heart,3820 saying,559 Lo, I am come to great estate,1431 and have gotten3254 more wisdom2451 than all [they] that have been before6440 me in Jerusalem:3389 yea, my heart3820 had great7235 experience7200 of wisdom2451 and knowledge.
1:17 And I gave5414 my heart3820 to know3045 wisdom,2451 and to know3045 madness1947 and folly:5531 I perceived3045 that this1571 also is vexation7475 of spirit.
1:18 For in much7230 wisdom2451 [is] much7230 grief:3708 and he that increaseth3254 knowledge1847 increaseth3254 sorrow.
[Ecclesiastes 2]
2:1 I said559 in mine heart,3820 Go to now,3212 I will prove5254 thee with mirth,8057 therefore enjoy7200 pleasure:2896 and, behold, this also [is] vanity.
2:2 I said559 of laughter,7814 [It is] mad:1984 and of mirth,8057 What2090 doeth
2:3 I sought8446 in mine heart3820 to give4900 myself1320 unto wine,3196 yet acquainting5090 mine heart3820 with wisdom;2451 and to lay hold270 on folly,5531 till I might see7200 what [was] that good2896 for the sons1121 of men,120 which they should do6213 under the heaven8064 all4557 the days3117 of their life.
2:4 I made me great1431 works;4639 I builded1129 me houses;1004 I planted5193 me vineyards:
2:5 I made6213 me gardens1593 and orchards,6508 and I planted5193 trees6086 in them of all [kind of] fruits:
2:6 I made6213 me pools1295 of water,4325 to water8248 therewith the wood3293 that bringeth forth6779 trees:
2:7 I got7069 [me] servants5650 and maidens,8198 and had servants born1121 in my house;1004 also I had great7235 possessions4735 of great1241 and small cattle6629 above all that were in Jerusalem3389 before
2:8 I gathered3664 me also silver3701 and gold,2091 and the peculiar treasure5459 of kings4428 and of the provinces:4082 I gat6213 me men singers7891 and women singers,7891 and the delights8588 of the sons1121 of men,120 [as] musical instruments,7705
2:9 So I was great,1431 and increased3254 more than all that were before6440 me in Jerusalem:3389 also my wisdom2451 remained
2:10 And whatsoever mine eyes5869 desired7592 I kept680 not from them, I withheld4513 not my heart3820 from any joy;8057 for my heart3820 rejoiced8056 in all my labour:5999 and this was my portion2506 of all my labour.
2:11 Then I looked6437 on all the works4639 that my hands3027 had wrought,6213 and on the labour5999 that I had laboured5998 to do:6213 and, behold, all [was] vanity1892 and vexation7469 of spirit,7307 and [there was] no profit3504 under the sun.
2:12 And I turned6437 myself to behold7200 wisdom,2451 and madness,1947 and folly:5531 for what [can] the man120 [do] that cometh935 after310 the king?4428 [even] that which hath been already3528 done.
2:13 Then I saw7200 that3426 wisdom2451 excelleth3504 folly,5531 as far as light216 excelleth3504 darkness.
2:14 The wise man's2450 eyes5869 [are] in his head;7218 but the fool3684 walketh1980 in darkness:2822 and I myself perceived3045 also that one259 event4745 happeneth
2:15 Then227 said559 I in my heart,3820 As it happeneth4745 to the fool,3684 so it happeneth7136 even to me;1571 and why was I then more3148 wise?2449 Then I said1696 in my heart,3820 that this also [is] vanity.
2:16 For [there is] no remembrance2146 of the wise2450 more than5973 of the fool3684 for ever;5769 seeing that which now3528 [is] in the days3117 to come935 shall all be forgotten.7911 And how dieth4191 the wise2450 [man]? as the fool.
2:17 Therefore I hated8130 life;2416 because the work4639 that is wrought6213 under the sun8121 [is] grievous7451 unto me: for all [is] vanity1892 and vexation7469 of spirit.
2:18 Yea, I hated8130 all my labour5999 which I had taken6001 under the sun:8121 because I should leave3240 it unto the man120 that shall be after
2:19 And who knoweth3045 whether he shall be a wise2450 [man] or a fool?5530 yet shall he have rule7980 over all my labour5999 wherein I have laboured,5998 and wherein I have shewed myself wise2449 under the sun.8121 This [is] also vanity.
2:20 Therefore I went about5437 to cause2976 my heart3820 to despair2976 of all the labour5999 which I took5998 under the sun.
2:21 For there is3426 a man120 whose labour5999 [is] in wisdom,2451 and in knowledge,1847 and in equity;3788 yet to a man120 that hath not laboured5998 therein shall he leave5414 it [for] his portion.2506 This also [is] vanity1892 and a great7227 evil.
2:22 For what hath1933 man120 of all his labour,5999 and of the vexation7475 of his heart,3820 wherein1931 he hath laboured6001 under the sun?
2:23 For all his days3117 [are] sorrows,4341 and his travail6045 grief;3708 yea, his heart3820 taketh not rest7901 in the night.3915 This is also vanity.
2:24 [There is] nothing better2896 for a man,120 [than] that he should eat398 and drink,8354 and [that] he should make his soul5315 enjoy7200 good2896 in his labour.5999 This2090 also I saw,7200 that it [was] from the hand3027 of God.
2:25 For who can eat,398 or who else can hasten2363 [hereunto], more
2:26 For [God] giveth5414 to a man120 that [is] good2896 in his sight6440 wisdom,2451 and knowledge,1847 and joy:8057 but to the sinner2398 he giveth5414 travail,6045 to gather622 and to heap up,3664 that he may give5414 to [him that is] good2896 before6440 God.430 This also [is] vanity1892 and vexation7469 of spirit.
[Ecclesiastes 3]
3:1 To every [thing there is] a season,2165 and a time6256 to every purpose2656 under the heaven:
3:2 A time6256 to be born,3205 and a time6256 to die;4191 a time6256 to plant,5193 and a time6256 to pluck up6131 [that which is] planted;
3:3 A time6256 to kill,2026 and a time6256 to heal;7495 a time6256 to break down,6555 and a time6256 to build up;
3:4 A time6256 to weep,1058 and a time6256 to laugh;7832 a time6256 to mourn,5594 and a time6256 to dance;
3:5 A time6256 to cast away7993 stones,68 and a time6256 to gather3664 stones68 together;3664 a time6256 to embrace,2263 and a time6256 to refrain7368 from embracing;
3:6 A time6256 to get,1245 and a time6256 to lose;6 a time6256 to keep,8104 and a time6256 to cast away;
3:7 A time6256 to rend,7167 and a time6256 to sew;8609 a time6256 to keep silence,2814 and a time6256 to speak;
3:8C A time6256 to love,157 and a time6256 to hate;8130 a time6256 of war,4421 and a time6256 of peace.
3:9C What profit3504 hath he that worketh6213 in that wherein834 he laboureth?
3:10C I have seen7200 the travail,6045 which God430 hath given5414 to the sons1121 of men120 to be exercised
3:11 He hath made6213 every [thing] beautiful3303 in his time:6256 also he hath set5414 the world5769 in their heart,3820 so that1097 no man120 can find out4672 the work4639 that God430 maketh6213 from the beginning7218 to the end.
3:12 I know3045 that [there is] no good2896 in them, but for [a man] to rejoice,8055 and to do6213 good2896 in his life.
3:13 And also that every man120 should eat398 and drink,8354 and enjoy7200 the good2896 of all his labour,5999 it [is] the gift4991 of God.
3:14 I know3045 that, whatsoever God430 doeth,6213 it shall be for ever:5769 nothing369 can be put3254 to it, nor any thing taken1639 from it: and God430 doeth6213 [it], that [men] should fear3372 before
3:15 That which hath been is now;3528 and that which is to be hath already3528 been; and God430 requireth1245 that which is past.
3:16 And moreover I saw7200 under the sun8121 the place4725 of judgment,4941 [that] wickedness7562 [was] there; and the place4725 of righteousness,6664 [that] iniquity
3:17 I said559 in mine heart,3820 God430 shall judge8199 the righteous6662 and the wicked:7563 for [there is] a time6256 there for every purpose2656 and for every work.
3:18C I said559 in mine heart3820 concerning the estate1700 of the sons1121 of men,120 that God430 might manifest1305 them, and that they might see7200 that they1992 themselves are beasts.
3:19C For that which befalleth4745 the sons1121 of men120 befalleth4745 beasts;929 even one thing259 befalleth4745 them: as the one dieth,4194 so dieth4194 the other;2088 yea, they have all one259 breath;7307 so that a man120 hath no preeminence4195 above a beast:929 for all [is] vanity.
3:20C All go1980 unto one259 place;4725 all are of the dust,6083 and all turn7725 to dust6083 again.
3:21C Who knoweth3045 the spirit7307 of man1121120 that goeth5927 upward,4605 and the spirit7307 of the beast929 that goeth3381 downward4295 to the earth?
3:22 Wherefore I perceive7200 that [there is] nothing better,2896 than that a man120 should rejoice8055 in his own works;4639 for that [is] his portion:2506 for who shall bring935 him to see7200 what shall be after
[Ecclesiastes 4]
4:1 So I returned,7725 and considered7200 all the oppressions6217 that are done6213 under the sun:8121 and behold the tears1832 of [such as were] oppressed,6231 and they had no comforter;5162 and on the side3027 of their oppressors6231 [there was] power;3581 but they had no comforter.
4:2 Wherefore I praised7623 the dead4191 which are already3528 dead4191 more than the living2416 which are yet5728 alive.
4:3 Yea, better2896 [is he] than both8147 they, which hath not yet5728 been, who hath not seen7200 the evil7451 work4639 that is done6213 under the sun.
4:4 Again, I considered7200 all travail,5999 and every right3788 work,4639 that for this a man376 is envied7068 of his neighbour.7453 This [is] also vanity1892 and vexation7469 of spirit.
4:5 The fool3684 foldeth2263 his hands3027 together,2263 and eateth398 his own flesh.
4:6 Better2896 [is] an handful3709 [with] quietness,5183 than both the hands2651 full4393 [with] travail5999 and vexation7469 of spirit.
4:7 Then I returned,7725 and I saw7200 vanity1892 under the sun.
4:8 There is3426 one259 [alone], and [there is] not a second;8145 yea, he hath neither child1121 nor brother:251 yet [is there] no end7093 of all his labour;5999 neither is his eye5869 satisfied7646 with riches;6239 neither [saith he], For whom do I labour,6001 and bereave2637 my soul5315 of good?2896 This [is] also vanity,1892 yea, it [is] a sore7451 travail.
4:9C Two8147 [are] better2896 than one;259 because they have3426 a good2896 reward7939 for their labour.
4:10 For if they fall,5307 the one259 will lift up6965 his fellow:2270 but woe337 to him [that is] alone259 when he falleth;5307 for [he hath] not another8145 to help him up.
4:11 Again,1571 if two8147 lie together,7901 then they have heat:2552 but how can one259 be warm
4:12 And if one259 prevail8630 against him, two8147 shall withstand5975 him; and a threefold8027 cord2339 is not quickly4120 broken.
4:13 Better2896 [is] a poor4542 and a wise2450 child3206 than an old2205 and foolish3684 king,4428 who will3045 no more be admonished.
4:14 For out of prison6311004 he cometh3318 to reign;4427 whereas also [he that is] born3205 in his kingdom4438 becometh poor.
4:15 I considered7200 all the living2416 which walk1980 under the sun,8121 with the second8145 child3206 that shall stand up
4:16 [There is] no end7093 of all the people,5971 [even] of all that have been before6440 them: they also that come after314 shall not rejoice8055 in him. Surely this also [is] vanity1892 and vexation7475 of spirit.
[Ecclesiastes 5]
5:1C Keep8104 thy foot7272 when thou goest3212 to the house1004 of God,430 and be more ready7138 to hear,8085 than to give5414 the sacrifice2077 of fools:3684 for they consider3045 not that they do6213 evil.
5:2C Be not rash926 with thy mouth,6310 and let not thine heart3820 be hasty4116 to utter3318 [any] thing1697 before6440 God:430 for God430 [is] in heaven,8064 and thou upon earth:776 therefore let thy words1697 be few.
5:3 For a dream2472 cometh935 through the multitude7230 of business;6045 and a fool's3684 voice6963 [is known] by multitude7230 of words.
5:4C When thou vowest5087 a vow5088 unto God,430 defer309 not to pay7999 it; for [he hath] no pleasure2656 in fools:3684 pay7999 that which thou hast vowed.
5:5C Better2896 [is it] that thou shouldest not vow,5087 than that thou shouldest vow5087 and not pay.
5:6 Suffer5414 not thy mouth6310 to cause thy flesh1320 to sin;2398 neither say559 thou before6440 the angel,4397 that it [was] an error:7684 wherefore should God430 be angry7107 at thy voice,6963 and destroy2254 the work4639 of thine hands?
5:7 For in the multitude7230 of dreams2472 and many7235 words1697 [there are] also [divers] vanities:1892 but fear3372 thou God.
5:8C If thou seest7200 the oppression6233 of the poor,7326 and violent1499 perverting of judgment4941 and justice6664 in a province,4082 marvel8539 not at the matter:2656 for [he that is] higher1364 than the highest1364 regardeth;8104 and [there be] higher1364 than they.
5:9 Moreover the profit3504 of the earth776 is for all: the king4428 [himself] is served5647 by the field.
5:10 He that loveth157 silver3701 shall not be satisfied7646 with silver;3701 nor he that loveth157 abundance1995 with increase:8393 this [is] also vanity.
5:11C When goods2896 increase,7235 they are increased7231 that eat398 them: and what good3788 [is there] to the owners1167 thereof, saving518 the beholding72077212 [of them] with their eyes?
5:12 The sleep8142 of a labouring man5647 [is] sweet,4966 whether he eat398 little4592 or much:7235 but the abundance7647 of the rich6223 will not suffer3240 him to sleep.
5:13 There is3426 a sore2470 evil7451 [which] I have seen7200 under the sun,8121 [namely], riches6239 kept8104 for the owners1167 thereof to their hurt.
5:14 But those riches6239 perish6 by evil7451 travail:6045 and he begetteth3205 a son,1121 and [there is] nothing3972 in his hand.
5:15 As he came forth3318 of his mother's517 womb,990 naked6174 shall he return7725 to go3212 as he came,935 and shall take5375 nothing3972 of his labour,5999 which he may carry away3212 in his hand.
5:16 And this2090 also [is] a sore2470 evil,7451 [that] in all points5980 as he came,935 so shall he go:3212 and what profit3504 hath he that hath laboured5998 for the wind?
5:17 All his days3117 also he eateth398 in darkness,2822 and [he hath] much7235 sorrow3707 and wrath7110 with his sickness.
5:18 Behold [that] which I have seen:7200 [it is] good2896 and comely3303 [for one] to eat398 and to drink,8354 and to enjoy7200 the good2896 of all his labour5999 that he taketh5998 under the sun8121 all4557 the days3117 of his life,2416 which God430 giveth5414 him: for it [is] his portion.
5:19 Every man120 also to whom God430 hath given5414 riches6239 and wealth,5233 and hath given him power7980 to eat398 thereof, and to take5375 his portion,2506 and to rejoice8055 in his labour;5999 this2090 [is] the gift4991 of God.
5:20 For he shall not much7235 remember2142 the days3117 of his life;2416 because God430 answereth6031 [him] in the joy8057 of his heart.
[Ecclesiastes 6]
6:1 There is3426 an evil7451 which I have seen7200 under the sun,8121 and it [is] common7227 among men:
6:2 A man376 to whom God430 hath given5414 riches,6239 wealth,5233 and honour,3519 so that he wanteth2638 nothing for his soul5315 of all that he desireth,183 yet God430 giveth him not power7980 to eat398 thereof, but a stranger3765237 eateth398 it: this [is] vanity,1892 and it [is] an evil7451 disease.
6:3 If a man376 beget3205 an hundred3967 [children], and live2421 many7227 years,8141 so that the days3117 of his years8141 be many,7227 and his soul5315 be not filled7646 with good,2896 and also [that] he have no burial;6900 I say,559 [that] an untimely birth5309 [is] better
6:4 For he cometh935 in with vanity,1892 and departeth3212 in darkness,2822 and his name8034 shall be covered3680 with darkness.
6:5 Moreover he hath not seen7200 the sun,8121 nor known3045 [any thing]: this2088 hath more rest5183 than
6:6 Yea, though432 he live2421 a thousand505 years8141 twice6471 [told], yet hath he seen7200 no good:2896 do not all go1980 to one259 place?
6:7 All the labour5999 of man120 [is] for his mouth,6310 and yet the appetite5315 is not filled.
6:8 For what hath the wise2450 more3148 than the fool?3684 what hath the poor,6041 that knoweth3045 to walk1980 before the living?
6:9C Better2896 [is] the sight4758 of the eyes5869 than the wandering1980 of the desire:5315 this [is] also vanity1892 and vexation7469 of spirit.
6:10 That which hath been is named71218034 already,3528 and it is known3045 that it [is] man:120 neither may3201 he contend1777 with him that is mightier
6:11 Seeing there be3426 many7235 things1697 that increase7235 vanity,1892 what [is] man120 the better?
6:12C For who knoweth3045 what [is] good2896 for man120 in [this] life,2416 all4557 the days3117 of his vain1892 life2416 which he spendeth6213 as a shadow?6738 for who can tell5046 a man120 what shall be after310 him under the sun?
[Ecclesiastes 7]
7:1C A good name8034 [is] better2896 than precious2896 ointment;8081 and the day3117 of death4194 than the day3117 of one's birth.
7:2C [It is] better2896 to go3212 to the house1004 of mourning,60 than to go3212 to the house1004 of feasting:4960 for834 that [is] the end5490 of all men;120 and the living2416 will lay5414 [it] to his heart.
7:3 Sorrow3708 [is] better2896 than laughter:7814 for by the sadness7455 of the countenance6440 the heart3820 is made better.
7:4 The heart3820 of the wise2450 [is] in the house1004 of mourning;60 but the heart3820 of fools3684 [is] in the house1004 of mirth.
7:5 [It is] better2896 to hear8085 the rebuke1606 of the wise,2450 than for a man376 to hear8085 the song7892 of fools.
7:6 For as the crackling6963 of thorns5518 under a pot,5518 so [is] the laughter7814 of the fool:3684 this also [is] vanity.
7:7 Surely oppression6233 maketh a wise man2450 mad;1984 and a gift4979 destroyeth6 the heart.
7:8C Better2896 [is] the end319 of a thing1697 than the beginning7225 thereof: [and] the patient750 in spirit7307 [is] better2896 than the proud1362 in spirit.
7:9C Be not hasty926 in thy spirit7307 to be angry:3707 for anger3708 resteth5117 in the bosom2436 of fools.
7:10 Say559 not thou, What is [the cause] that the former7223 days3117 were better2896 than these? for thou dost not enquire7592 wisely
7:11 Wisdom2451 [is] good2896 with an inheritance:5159 and [by it there is] profit3148 to them that see7200 the sun.
7:12 For wisdom2451 [is] a defence,6738 [and] money3701 [is] a defence:6738 but the excellency3504 of knowledge1847 [is, that] wisdom2451 giveth life2421 to them that have
7:13 Consider7200 the work4639 of God:430 for who can3201 make [that] straight,8626 which he hath made crooked?
7:14C In the day3117 of prosperity2896 be joyful,2896 but in the day3117 of adversity7451 consider:7200 God430 also hath set6213 the one over against5980 the other, to the end1700 that man120 should find4672 nothing3972 after
7:15 All [things] have I seen7200 in the days3117 of my vanity:1892 there is3426 a just6662 [man] that perisheth6 in his righteousness,6664 and there is a wicked7563 [man] that prolongeth748 [his life] in his wickedness.
7:16C Be not righteous6662 over much;7235 neither make thyself over3148 wise:2449 why shouldest thou destroy
7:17 Be not over much7235 wicked,7561 neither be thou foolish:5530 why shouldest thou die4191 before thy time?
7:18 [It is] good2896 that thou shouldest take hold270 of this; yea, also from this2088 withdraw3240 not thine hand:3027 for he that feareth3373 God430 shall come forth
7:19 Wisdom2451 strengtheneth5810 the wise2450 more than ten6235 mighty7989 [men] which are in the city.
7:20 For [there is] not a just6662 man120 upon earth,776 that doeth6213 good,2896 and sinneth
7:21 Also take5414 no heed3820 unto all words1697 that are spoken;1696 lest thou hear8085 thy servant5650 curse
7:22 For oftentimes64717227 also thine own heart3820 knoweth3045 that thou thyself likewise hast cursed7043 others.
7:23 All this2090 have I proved5254 by wisdom:2451 I said,559 I will be wise;2449 but it [was] far
7:24 That which is far off,7350 and exceeding deep,6013 who can find it out?
7:25C I applied5437 mine heart3820 to know,3045 and to search,8446 and to seek out1245 wisdom,2451 and the reason2808 [of things], and to know3045 the wickedness7562 of folly,3689 even of foolishness5531 [and] madness:
7:26 And I find4672 more bitter4751 than death4194 the woman,802 whose heart3820 [is] snares4685 and nets,2764 [and] her hands3027 [as] bands:612 whoso pleaseth28966440 God430 shall escape4422 from her; but the sinner2398 shall be taken
7:27 Behold,7200 this have I found,4672 saith559 the preacher,6953 [counting] one259 by one,259 to find out4672 the account:
7:28 Which yet my soul5315 seeketh,1245 but I find4672 not: one259 man120 among a thousand505 have I found;4672 but a woman802 among all those have I not found.
7:29C Lo,7200 this only905 have I found,4672 that God430 hath made6213 man120 upright;3477 but they have sought out1245 many7227 inventions.
[Ecclesiastes 8]
8:1 Who [is] as the wise2450 [man]? and who knoweth3045 the interpretation6592 of a thing?1697 a man's120 wisdom2451 maketh his face6440 to shine,215 and the boldness5797 of his face6440 shall be changed.
8:2 I [counsel thee] to keep8104 the king's4428 commandment,6310 and [that] in regard1700 of the oath7621 of God.
8:3 Be not hasty926 to go out3212 of his sight:6440 stand5975 not in an evil7451 thing;1697 for he doeth6213 whatsoever pleaseth
8:4 Where the word1697 of a king4428 [is, there is] power:7983 and who may say559 unto him, What doest
8:5 Whoso keepeth8104 the commandment4687 shall feel3045 no evil7451 thing:1697 and a wise man's2450 heart3820 discerneth3045 both time6256 and judgment.
8:6 Because to every purpose2656 there is3426 time6256 and judgment,4941 therefore the misery7451 of man120 [is] great
8:7 For he knoweth3045 not that which shall be: for who can tell
8:8C [There is] no man120 that hath power7989 over the spirit7307 to retain3607 the spirit;7307 neither [hath he] power7983 in the day3117 of death:4194 and [there is] no discharge4917 in [that] war;4421 neither shall wickedness7562 deliver4422 those that are given
8:9 All this have I seen,7200 and applied5414 my heart3820 unto every work4639 that is done6213 under the sun:8121 [there is] a time6256 wherein one man120 ruleth7980 over another to his own hurt.
8:10 And so3651 I saw7200 the wicked7563 buried,6912 who had come935 and gone1980 from the place4725 of the holy,6918 and they were forgotten7911 in the city5892 where they had so done:6213 this [is] also vanity.
8:11 Because sentence6599 against an evil7451 work4639 is not executed6213 speedily,4120 therefore the heart3820 of the sons1121 of men120 is fully set4390 in them to do6213 evil.
8:12 Though a sinner2398 do6213 evil7451 an hundred times,3967 and his [days] be prolonged,748 yet surely I know3045 that it shall be well2896 with them that fear3373 God,430 which fear3372 before
8:13 But it shall not be well2896 with the wicked,7563 neither shall he prolong748 [his] days,3117 [which are] as a shadow;6738 because he feareth3373 not before6440 God.
8:14 There is3426 a vanity1892 which is done6213 upon the earth;776 that there be just6662 [men], unto whom it happeneth5060 according to the work4639 of the wicked;7563 again, there be3426 wicked7563 [men], to whom it happeneth5060 according to the work4639 of the righteous:6662 I said559 that this also1571 [is] vanity.
8:15 Then I commended7623 mirth,8057 because a man120 hath no better thing2896 under the sun,8121 than to eat,398 and to drink,8354 and to be merry:8055 for that shall abide3867 with him of his labour5999 the days3117 of his life,2416 which God430 giveth5414 him under the sun.
8:16 When I applied5414 mine heart3820 to know3045 wisdom,2451 and to see7200 the business6045 that is done6213 upon the earth:776 (for also [there is that] neither day3117 nor night3915 seeth7200 sleep8142 with his eyes:)
8:17C Then I beheld7200 all the work4639 of God,430 that a man120 cannot3201 find out4672 the work4639 that is done6213 under the sun:8121 because834 though7945 a man120 labour5998 to seek [it] out,1245 yet he shall not find4672 [it]; yea further; though a wise2450 [man] think559 to know3045 [it], yet shall he not be able3201 to find
[Ecclesiastes 9]
9:1C For all this I considered5414 in my heart3820 even to declare952 all this, that the righteous,6662 and the wise,2450 and their works,5652 [are] in the hand3027 of God:430 no man120 knoweth3045 either1571 love160 or hatred8135 [by] all [that is] before
9:2 All [things come] alike to all: [there is] one259 event4745 to the righteous,6662 and to the wicked;7563 to the good2896 and to the clean,2889 and to the unclean;2931 to him that sacrificeth,2076 and to him that834 sacrificeth2076 not: as [is] the good,2896 so [is] the sinner;2398 [and] he that sweareth,7650 as [he] that feareth3373 an oath.
9:3 This [is] an evil7451 among all [things] that are done6213 under the sun,8121 that [there is] one259 event4745 unto all: yea, also the heart3820 of the sons1121 of men120 is full4390 of evil,7451 and madness1947 [is] in their heart3824 while they live,2416 and after310 that [they go] to the dead.
9:4 For4310 to him that is3426 joined2266977 to all the living2416 there is hope:986 for a living2416 dog3611 is better2896 than a dead4191 lion.
9:5C For the living2416 know3045 that they shall die:4191 but the dead4191 know3045 not any thing,3972 neither have they any more a reward;7939 for the memory2143 of them is forgotten.
9:6C Also their love,160 and their hatred,8135 and their envy,7068 is now3528 perished;6 neither have they any more a portion2506 for ever5769 in any [thing] that is done6213 under the sun.
9:7 Go thy way,3212 eat398 thy bread3899 with joy,8057 and drink8354 thy wine3196 with a merry2896 heart;3820 for God430 now3528 accepteth7521 thy works.
9:8 Let thy garments899 be always6256 white;3836 and let thy head7218 lack2637 no ointment.
9:9 Live2416 joyfully7200 with the wife802 whom thou lovest157 all the days3117 of the life2416 of thy vanity,1892 which he hath given5414 thee under the sun,8121 all the days3117 of thy vanity:1892 for that [is] thy portion2506 in [this] life,2416 and in thy labour5999 which thou takest6001 under the sun.
9:10C Whatsoever thy hand3027 findeth4672 to do,6213 do6213 [it] with thy might;3581 for [there is] no work,4639 nor device,2808 nor knowledge,1847 nor wisdom,2451 in the grave,7585 whither thou goest.
9:11C I returned,7725 and saw7200 under the sun,8121 that the race4793 [is] not to the swift,7031 nor the battle4421 to the strong,1368 neither yet bread3899 to the wise,2450 nor yet riches6239 to men of understanding,995 nor yet favour2580 to men of skill;3045 but time6256 and chance6294 happeneth
9:12 For man120 also knoweth3045 not his time:6256 as the fishes1709 that are taken270 in an evil7451 net,4685 and as the birds6833 that are caught270 in the snare;6341 so1992 [are] the sons1121 of men120 snared3369 in an evil7451 time,6256 when it falleth5307 suddenly
9:13 This2090 wisdom2451 have I seen7200 also under the sun,8121 and it [seemed] great
9:14 [There was] a little6996 city,5892 and few4592 men582 within it; and there came935 a great1419 king4428 against it, and besieged5437 it, and built1129 great1419 bulwarks
9:15 Now there was found4672 in it a poor4542 wise2450 man,376 and he by his wisdom2451 delivered4422 the city;5892 yet no man120 remembered2142 that same poor4542 man.
9:16 Then said559 I, Wisdom2451 [is] better2896 than strength:1369 nevertheless the poor man's4542 wisdom2451 [is] despised,959 and his words1697 are not heard.
9:17 The words1697 of wise2450 [men are] heard8085 in quiet5183 more than the cry2201 of him that ruleth4910 among fools.
9:18 Wisdom2451 [is] better2896 than weapons3627 of war:7128 but one259 sinner2398 destroyeth6 much7235 good.
[Ecclesiastes 10]
10:1C Dead4194 flies2070 cause the ointment8081 of the apothecary7543 to send forth5042 a stinking savour:887 [so doth] a little4592 folly5531 him that is in reputation3368 for wisdom2451 [and] honour.
10:2 A wise man's2450 heart3820 [is] at his right hand;3225 but a fool's3684 heart3820 at his left.
10:3 Yea also, when he that is a fool5530 walketh1980 by the way,1870 his wisdom3820 faileth2638 [him], and he saith559 to every one [that] he [is] a fool.
10:4 If the spirit7307 of the ruler4910 rise up5927 against thee, leave3240 not thy place;4725 for yielding4832 pacifieth3240 great1419 offences.
10:5 There is3426 an evil7451 [which] I have seen7200 under the sun,8121 as an error7684 [which] proceedeth3318 from6440 the ruler:
10:6 Folly5529 is set5414 in great7227 dignity,4791 and the rich6223 sit3427 in low place.
10:7 I have seen7200 servants5650 upon horses,5483 and princes8269 walking1980 as servants5650 upon the earth.
10:8 He that diggeth2658 a pit1475 shall fall5307 into it; and whoso breaketh6555 an hedge,1447 a serpent5175 shall bite
10:9 Whoso removeth5265 stones68 shall be hurt6087 therewith; [and] he that cleaveth1234 wood6086 shall be endangered
10:10 If the iron1270 be blunt,6949 and he do not whet7043 the edge,6440 then must he put1396 to more strength:2428 but wisdom2451 [is] profitable3504 to direct.
10:11 Surely the serpent5175 will bite5391 without enchantment;3908 and a babbler39561167 is no better.
10:12C The words1697 of a wise man's2450 mouth6310 [are] gracious;2580 but the lips8193 of a fool3684 will swallow up
10:13 The beginning8462 of the words1697 of his mouth6310 [is] foolishness:5531 and the end319 of his talk6310 [is] mischievous7451 madness.
10:14 A fool5530 also is full7235 of words:1697 a man120 cannot tell3045 what shall be; and what shall be after310 him, who can tell
10:15 The labour5999 of the foolish3684 wearieth3021 every one of them, because he knoweth3045 not how to go3212 to the city.
10:16 Woe337 to thee, O land,776 when thy king4428 [is] a child,5288 and thy princes8269 eat398 in the morning!
10:17 Blessed835 [art] thou, O land,776 when thy king4428 [is] the son1121 of nobles,2715 and thy princes8269 eat398 in due season,6256 for strength,1369 and not for drunkenness!
10:18 By much slothfulness6103 the building4746 decayeth;4355 and through idleness8220 of the hands3027 the house1004 droppeth through.
10:19 A feast3899 is made6213 for laughter,7814 and wine3196 maketh merry:80552416 but money3701 answereth
10:20 Curse7043 not the king,4428 no not in thy thought;4093 and curse7043 not the rich6223 in thy bedchamber:23154904 for a bird5775 of the air8064 shall carry3212 the voice,6963 and that which hath1167 wings3671 shall tell5046 the matter.
[Ecclesiastes 11]
11:1C Cast7971 thy bread3899 upon6440 the waters:4325 for thou shalt find4672 it after many7230 days.
11:2 Give5414 a portion2506 to seven,7651 and also to eight;8083 for thou knowest3045 not what evil7451 shall be upon the earth.
11:3C If the clouds5645 be full4390 of rain,1653 they empty7324 [themselves] upon the earth:776 and if the tree6086 fall5307 toward the south,1864 or toward the north,6828 in the place4725 where the tree6086 falleth,5307 there it shall be.
11:4 He that observeth8104 the wind7307 shall not sow;2232 and he that regardeth7200 the clouds5645 shall not reap.
11:5 As thou knowest3045 not what [is] the way1870 of the spirit,7307 [nor] how the bones6106 [do grow] in the womb990 of her that is with child:4392 even so thou knowest3045 not the works4639 of God430 who maketh
11:6C In the morning1242 sow2232 thy seed,2233 and in the evening6153 withhold3240 not thine hand:3027 for thou knowest3045 not whether335 shall prosper,3787 either this or that, or whether they both8147 [shall be] alike259 good.
11:7 Truly the light216 [is] sweet,4966 and a pleasant2896 [thing it is] for the eyes5869 to behold7200 the sun:
11:8 But if a man120 live2421 many7235 years,8141 [and] rejoice8055 in them all; yet let him remember2142 the days3117 of darkness;2822 for they shall be many.7235 All that cometh935 [is] vanity.
11:9 Rejoice,8055 O young man,970 in thy youth;3208 and let thy heart3820 cheer2895 thee in the days3117 of thy youth,979 and walk1980 in the ways1870 of thine heart,3820 and in the sight4758 of thine eyes:5869 but know3045 thou, that for all these [things] God430 will bring935 thee into judgment.
11:10 Therefore remove5493 sorrow3708 from thy heart,3820 and put away5674 evil7451 from thy flesh:1320 for childhood3208 and youth7839 [are] vanity.
[Ecclesiastes 12]
12:1C Remember2142 now thy Creator1254 in the days3117 of thy youth,979 while the evil7451 days3117 come935 not, nor the years8141 draw nigh,5060 when thou shalt say,559 I have no pleasure
12:2C While the sun,8121 or the light,216 or the moon,3394 or the stars,3556 be not darkened,2821 nor the clouds5645 return7725 after310 the rain:
12:3C In the day3117 when the keepers8104 of the house1004 shall tremble,2111 and the strong2428 men582 shall bow5791 themselves, and the grinders2912 cease988 because they are few,4591 and those that look out7200 of the windows699 be darkened,
12:4C And the doors1817 shall be shut5462 in the streets,7784 when the sound6963 of the grinding2913 is low,8217 and he shall rise up6965 at the voice6963 of the bird,6833 and all the daughters1323 of musick7892 shall be brought low;
12:5C Also [when] they shall be afraid3372 of [that which is] high,1364 and fears2849 [shall be] in the way,1870 and the almond tree8247 shall flourish,5006 and the grasshopper2284 shall be a burden,5445 and desire35 shall fail:6565 because man120 goeth1980 to his long5769 home,1004 and the mourners5594 go about5437 the streets:
12:6C Or ever3808 the silver3701 cord2256 be loosed,75767368 or the golden2091 bowl1543 be broken,7533 or the pitcher3537 be broken7665 at the fountain,4002 or the wheel1534 broken7533 at the cistern.
12:7C Then shall the dust6083 return7725 to the earth776 as it was: and the spirit7307 shall return7725 unto God430 who gave
12:8C Vanity1892 of vanities,1892 saith559 the preacher;6953 all [is] vanity.
12:9 And moreover,3148 because the preacher6953 was wise,2450 he still taught3925 the people5971 knowledge;1847 yea, he gave good heed,239 and sought out,2713 [and] set in order8626 many7235 proverbs.
12:10 The preacher6953 sought1245 to find out4672 acceptable2656 words:1697 and [that which was] written3789 [was] upright,3476 [even] words1697 of truth.
12:11 The words1697 of the wise2450 [are] as goads,1861 and as nails4930 fastened5193 [by] the masters1167 of assemblies,627 [which] are given5414 from one259 shepherd.
12:12 And further,3148 by these,1992 my son,1121 be admonished:2094 of making6213 many7235 books5612 [there is] no end;7093 and much7235 study3854 [is] a weariness3024 of the flesh.
12:13C Let us hear8085 the conclusion5490 of the whole matter:1697 Fear3372 God,430 and keep8104 his commandments:4687 for this [is] the whole [duty] of man.
12:14C For God430 shall bring935 every work4639 into judgment,4941 with every secret thing,5956 whether [it be] good,2896 or whether [it be] evil.
