Jeremiah

2Moreover the word¹⁶⁹⁷ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ came to me, saying,

² Go¹⁹⁸⁰ and cry⁷¹²¹ in the ears²⁴¹ of Jerusalem,³³⁸⁹ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord;³⁰⁶⁸ I remember²¹⁴² thee, the kindness²⁶¹⁷ of thy youth,⁵²⁷¹ the love¹⁶⁰ of thine espousals,³⁶²³ when thou wentest³²¹² after³¹⁰ me in the wilderness,⁴⁰⁵⁷ in a land⁷⁷⁶ that was not sown.

³ Israel³⁴⁷⁸ was holiness⁶⁹⁴⁴ unto the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ and the firstfruits⁷²²⁵ of his increase:⁸³⁹³ all that devour³⁹⁸ him shall offend;⁸¹⁶ evil⁷⁴⁵¹ shall come⁹³⁵ upon them, saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord.

⁴ Hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ ye the word¹⁶⁹⁷ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ O house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Jacob,³²⁹⁰ and all the families⁴⁹⁴⁰ of the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Israel:

⁵ Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ What iniquity⁵⁷⁶⁶ have your fathers¹ found⁴⁶⁷² in me, that they are gone far⁷³⁶⁸ from me, and have walked³²¹² after³¹⁰ vanity,¹⁸⁹² and are become vain?

⁶ Neither said⁵⁵⁹ they, Where is the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ that brought us up⁵⁹²⁷ out of the land⁷⁷⁶ of Egypt,⁴⁷¹⁴ that led³²¹² us through the wilderness,⁴⁰⁵⁷ through a land⁷⁷⁶ of deserts⁶¹⁶⁰ and of pits,⁷⁷⁴⁵ through a land⁷⁷⁶ of drought,⁶⁷²³ and of the shadow of death,⁶⁷⁵⁷ through a land⁷⁷⁶ that no man³⁷⁶ passed through,⁵⁶⁷⁴ and where no man¹²⁰ dwelt?

⁷ And I brought⁹³⁵ you into a plentiful³⁷⁵⁹ country,⁷⁷⁶ to eat³⁹⁸ the fruit⁶⁵²⁹ thereof and the goodness²⁸⁹⁸ thereof; but when ye entered,⁹³⁵ ye defiled²⁹³⁰ my land,⁷⁷⁶ and made⁷⁷⁶⁰ mine heritage⁵¹⁵⁹ an abomination.

⁸ The priests³⁵⁴⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ not, Where is the Lord?³⁰⁶⁸ and they that handle⁸⁶¹⁰ the law⁸⁴⁵¹ knew³⁰⁴⁵ me not: the pastors⁷⁴⁶² also transgressed⁶⁵⁸⁶ against me, and the prophets⁵⁰³⁰ prophesied⁵⁰¹² by Baal,¹¹⁶⁸ and walked¹⁹⁸⁰ after³¹⁰ things that do not profit.

⁹ Wherefore I will yet plead⁷³⁷⁸ with you, saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ and with your children's¹¹²¹ children¹¹²¹ will I plead.

¹⁰ For pass over⁵⁶⁷⁴ the isles³³⁹ of Chittim,³⁷⁹⁴ and see;⁷²⁰⁰ and send⁷⁹⁷¹ unto Kedar,⁶⁹³⁸ and consider⁹⁹⁵ diligently,³⁹⁶⁶ and see

¹¹ Hath a nation¹⁴⁷¹ changed³²³⁵ their gods,⁴³⁰ which are yet no gods?⁴³⁰ but my people⁵⁹⁷¹ have changed⁴¹⁷¹ their glory³⁵¹⁹ for that which doth not profit.

^12C Be astonished,⁸⁰⁷⁴ O ye heavens,⁸⁰⁶⁴ at this, and be horribly afraid,⁸¹⁷⁵ be ye very³⁹⁶⁶ desolate,²⁷¹⁷ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord.

^13C For my people⁵⁹⁷¹ have committed⁶²¹³ two⁸¹⁴⁷ evils;⁷⁴⁵¹ they have forsaken⁵⁸⁰⁰ me the fountain⁴⁷²⁶ of living²⁴¹⁶ waters,⁴³²⁵ and hewed them out²⁶⁷² cisterns,⁸⁷⁷ broken⁷⁶⁶⁵ cisterns,⁸⁷⁷ that can hold³⁵⁵⁷ no water.

¹⁴ Is Israel³⁴⁷⁸ a servant?⁵⁶⁵⁰ is he a homeborn^10043211 slave? why⁴⁰⁶⁹ is he spoiled?

¹⁵ The young lions³⁷¹⁵ roared⁷⁵⁸⁰ upon him, and yelled,^54146963 and they made⁷⁸⁹⁶ his land⁷⁷⁶ waste:⁸⁰⁴⁷ his cities⁵⁸⁹² are burned³³⁴¹ without inhabitant.

¹⁶ Also the children¹¹²¹ of Noph⁵²⁹⁷ and Tahapanes⁸⁴⁷¹ have broken⁷⁴⁶² the crown of thy head.

¹⁷ Hast thou not procured⁶²¹³ this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken⁵⁸⁰⁰ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ thy God,⁴³⁰ when⁶²⁵⁶ he led³²¹² thee by the way?

¹⁸ And now what hast thou to do in the way¹⁸⁷⁰ of Egypt,⁴⁷¹⁴ to drink⁸³⁵⁴ the waters⁴³²⁵ of Sihor?⁷⁸⁸³ or what hast thou to do in the way¹⁸⁷⁰ of Assyria,⁸⁰⁴ to drink⁸³⁵⁴ the waters⁴³²⁵ of the river?

¹⁹ Thine own wickedness⁷⁴⁵¹ shall correct³²⁵⁶ thee, and thy backslidings⁴⁸⁷⁸ shall reprove³¹⁹⁸ thee: know³⁰⁴⁵ therefore and see⁷²⁰⁰ that it is an evil⁷⁴⁵¹ thing and bitter,⁴⁷⁵¹ that thou hast forsaken⁵⁸⁰⁰ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ thy God,⁴³⁰ and that my fear⁶³⁴⁵ is not in thee, saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord¹³⁶ God³⁰⁶⁹ of hosts.

²⁰ For of old time⁵⁷⁶⁹ I have broken⁷⁶⁶⁵ thy yoke,⁵⁹²³ and burst⁵⁴²³ thy bands;⁴¹⁴⁷ and thou saidst,⁵⁵⁹ I will not transgress;^56745647 when upon every high¹³⁶⁴ hill¹³⁸⁹ and under every green⁷⁴⁸⁸ tree⁶⁰⁸⁶ thou wanderest,⁶⁸⁰⁸ playing the harlot.

^21C Yet I had planted⁵¹⁹³ thee a noble vine,⁸³²¹ wholly a right⁵⁷¹ seed:²²³³ how then art thou turned²⁰¹⁵ into the degenerate plant⁵⁴⁹⁴ of a strange⁵²³⁷ vine

²² For though thou wash³⁵²⁶ thee with nitre,⁵⁴²⁷ and take thee much⁷²³⁵ soap,¹²⁸⁷ yet thine iniquity⁵⁷⁷¹ is marked³⁷⁹⁹ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ me, saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord¹³⁶ God.

²³ How canst thou say,⁵⁵⁹ I am not polluted,²⁹³⁰ I have not gone¹⁹⁸⁰ after³¹⁰ Baalim?¹¹⁶⁸ see⁷²⁰⁰ thy way¹⁸⁷⁰ in the valley,¹⁵¹⁶ know³⁰⁴⁵ what thou hast done:⁶²¹³ thou art a swift⁷⁰³¹ dromedary¹⁰⁷² traversing⁸³⁰⁸ her ways;

²⁴ A wild ass⁶⁵⁰¹ used³⁹²⁸ to the wilderness,⁴⁰⁵⁷ that snuffeth up⁷⁶⁰² the wind⁷³⁰⁷ at her pleasure;^1855315 in her occasion⁸³⁸⁵ who can turn her away?⁷⁷²⁵ all they that seek¹²⁴⁵ her will not weary³²⁸⁶ themselves; in her month²³²⁰ they shall find

²⁵ Withhold⁴⁵¹³ thy foot⁷²⁷² from being unshod,³¹⁸² and thy throat¹⁶²⁷ from thirst:⁶⁷⁷³ but thou saidst,⁵⁵⁹ There is no hope:²⁹⁷⁶ no; for I have loved¹⁵⁷ strangers,²¹¹⁴ and after³¹⁰ them will I go.

²⁶ As the thief¹⁵⁹⁰ is ashamed¹³²² when he is found,⁴⁶⁷² so is the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ ashamed;³⁰⁰¹ they, their kings,⁴⁴²⁸ their princes,⁸²⁶⁹ and their priests,³⁵⁴⁸ and their prophets,

²⁷ Saying⁵⁵⁹ to a stock,⁶⁰⁸⁶ Thou art my father;¹ and to a stone,⁶⁸ Thou hast brought me forth:³²⁰⁵ for they have turned⁶⁴³⁷ their back⁶²⁰³ unto me, and not their face:⁶⁴⁴⁰ but in the time⁶²⁵⁶ of their trouble⁷⁴⁵¹ they will say,⁵⁵⁹ Arise,⁶⁹⁶⁵ and save

²⁸ But where are thy gods⁴³⁰ that thou hast made⁶²¹³ thee? let them arise,⁶⁹⁶⁵ if they can save³⁴⁶⁷ thee in the time⁶²⁵⁶ of thy trouble:⁷⁴⁵¹ for according to the number⁴⁵⁵⁷ of thy cities⁵⁸⁹² are thy gods,⁴³⁰ O Judah.

²⁹ Wherefore will ye plead⁷³⁷⁸ with me? ye all have transgressed⁶⁵⁸⁶ against me, saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord.

³⁰ In vain⁷⁷²³ have I smitten⁵²²¹ your children;¹¹²¹ they received³⁹⁴⁷ no correction:⁴¹⁴⁸ your own sword²⁷¹⁹ hath devoured³⁹⁸ your prophets,⁵⁰³⁰ like a destroying⁷⁸⁴³ lion.

³¹ O generation,¹⁷⁵⁵ see⁷²⁰⁰ ye the word¹⁶⁹⁷ of the Lord.³⁰⁶⁸ Have I been a wilderness⁴⁰⁵⁷ unto Israel?³⁴⁷⁸ a land⁷⁷⁶ of darkness?³⁹⁹¹ wherefore say⁵⁵⁹ my people,⁵⁹⁷¹ We are lords;⁷³⁰⁰ we will come

³² Can a maid¹³³⁰ forget⁷⁹¹¹ her ornaments,⁵⁷¹⁶ or a bride³⁶¹⁸ her attire?⁷¹⁹⁶ yet my people⁵⁹⁷¹ have forgotten⁷⁹¹¹ me days³¹¹⁷ without number.

³³ Why trimmest³¹⁹⁰ thou thy way¹⁸⁷⁰ to seek¹²⁴⁵ love?¹⁶⁰ therefore hast thou also taught³⁹²⁵ the wicked ones⁷⁴⁵¹ thy ways.

³⁴ Also in thy skirts³⁶⁷¹ is found⁴⁶⁷² the blood¹⁸¹⁸ of the souls⁵³¹⁵ of the poor³⁴ innocents:⁵³⁵⁵ I have not found⁴⁶⁷² it by secret search,

^35C Yet thou sayest,⁵⁵⁹ Because I am innocent,⁵³⁵² surely his anger⁶³⁹ shall turn⁷⁷²⁵ from me. Behold, I will plead⁸¹⁹⁹ with thee, because thou sayest,⁵⁵⁹ I have not sinned.

³⁶ Why gaddest thou about²³⁵ so much³⁹⁶⁶ to change⁸¹³⁸ thy way?¹⁸⁷⁰ thou also shalt be ashamed⁹⁵⁴ of Egypt,⁴⁷¹⁴ as thou wast ashamed⁹⁵⁴ of Assyria.

³⁷ Yea, thou shalt go forth³³¹⁸ from him, and thine hands³⁰²⁷ upon thine head:⁷²¹⁸ for the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ hath rejected³⁹⁸⁸ thy confidences,⁴⁰⁰⁹ and thou shalt not prosper

3They say,⁵⁵⁹ If a man³⁷⁶ put away⁷⁹⁷¹ his wife,⁸⁰² and she go¹⁹⁸⁰ from him, and become another³¹² man's,³⁷⁶ shall he return unto her again?⁷⁷²⁵ shall not that land⁷⁷⁶ be greatly²⁶¹⁰ polluted?²⁶¹⁰ but thou hast played the harlot²¹⁸¹ with many⁷²²⁷ lovers;⁷⁴⁵³ yet return again⁷⁷²⁵ to me, saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord.

² Lift up⁵³⁷⁵ thine eyes⁵⁸⁶⁹ unto the high places,⁸²⁰⁵ and see⁷²⁰⁰ where³⁷⁵ thou hast not been lien^76937901 with. In the ways¹⁸⁷⁰ hast thou sat³⁴²⁷ for them, as the Arabian⁶¹⁶³ in the wilderness;⁴⁰⁵⁷ and thou hast polluted²⁶¹⁰ the land⁷⁷⁶ with thy whoredoms²¹⁸⁴ and with thy wickedness.

³ Therefore the showers⁷²⁴¹ have been withholden,⁴⁵¹³ and there hath been no latter rain;⁴⁴⁵⁶ and thou hadst a whore's^2181802 forehead,⁴⁶⁹⁶ thou refusedst³⁹⁸⁵ to be ashamed.

⁴ Wilt thou not from this time cry⁷¹²¹ unto me, My father,¹ thou art the guide⁴⁴¹ of my youth?

⁵ Will he reserve⁵²⁰¹ his anger for ever?⁵⁷⁶⁹ will he keep⁸¹⁰⁴ it to the end?⁵³³¹ Behold, thou hast spoken¹⁶⁹⁶ and done⁶²¹³ evil things⁷⁴⁵¹ as thou couldest.

⁶ The Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ also unto me in the days³¹¹⁷ of Josiah²⁹⁷⁷ the king,⁴⁴²⁸ Hast thou seen⁷²⁰⁰ that which backsliding⁴⁸⁷⁸ Israel³⁴⁷⁸ hath done?⁶²¹³ she is gone up¹⁹⁸⁰ upon every high¹³⁶⁴ mountain²⁰²² and under⁸⁴⁷⁸ every green⁷⁴⁸⁸ tree,⁶⁰⁸⁶ and there hath played the harlot.

⁷ And I said⁵⁵⁹ after³¹⁰ she had done⁶²¹³ all these things, Turn⁷⁷²⁵ thou unto me. But she returned⁷⁷²⁵ not. And her treacherous⁹⁰¹ sister²⁶⁹ Judah³⁰⁶³ saw

^8C And I saw,⁷²⁰⁰ when for all the causes¹⁸² whereby backsliding⁴⁸⁷⁸ Israel³⁴⁷⁸ committed adultery⁵⁰⁰³ I had put her away,⁷⁹⁷¹ and given⁵⁴¹⁴ her a bill⁵⁶¹² of divorce;³⁷⁴⁸ yet her treacherous⁸⁹⁸ sister²⁶⁹ Judah³⁰⁶³ feared³³⁷² not, but went³²¹² and played the harlot

⁹ And it came to pass through the lightness⁶⁹⁶³ of her whoredom,²¹⁸⁴ that she defiled²⁶¹⁰ the land,⁷⁷⁶ and committed adultery⁵⁰⁰³ with stones⁶⁸ and with stocks.

¹⁰ And yet for all this her treacherous⁹⁰¹ sister²⁶⁹ Judah³⁰⁶³ hath not turned⁷⁷²⁵ unto me with her whole heart,³⁸²⁰ but feignedly,⁸²⁶⁷ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord.

¹¹ And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ unto me, The backsliding⁴⁸⁷⁸ Israel³⁴⁷⁸ hath justified⁶⁶⁶³ herself⁵³¹⁵ more than treacherous⁸⁹⁸ Judah.

¹² Go¹⁹⁸⁰ and proclaim⁷¹²¹ these words¹⁶⁹⁷ toward the north,⁶⁸²⁸ and say,⁵⁵⁹ Return,⁷⁷²⁵ thou backsliding⁴⁸⁷⁸ Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord;³⁰⁶⁸ and I will not cause mine anger⁶⁴⁴⁰ to fall⁵³⁰⁷ upon you: for I am merciful,²⁶²³ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ and I will not keep⁵²⁰¹ anger for ever.

¹³ Only acknowledge³⁰⁴⁵ thine iniquity,⁵⁷⁷¹ that thou hast transgressed⁶⁵⁸⁶ against the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ thy God,⁴³⁰ and hast scattered⁶³⁴⁰ thy ways¹⁸⁷⁰ to the strangers²¹¹⁴ under every green⁷⁴⁸⁸ tree,⁶⁰⁸⁶ and ye have not obeyed⁸⁰⁸⁵ my voice,⁶⁹⁶³ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord.

^14C Turn,⁷⁷²⁵ O backsliding⁷⁷²⁶ children,¹¹²¹ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord;³⁰⁶⁸ for I am married¹¹⁶⁶ unto you: and I will take³⁹⁴⁷ you one²⁵⁹ of a city,⁵⁸⁹² and two⁸¹⁴⁷ of a family,⁴⁹⁴⁰ and I will bring⁹³⁵ you to Zion:

¹⁵ And I will give⁵⁴¹⁴ you pastors⁷⁴⁶² according to mine heart,³⁸²⁰ which shall feed⁷⁴⁶² you with knowledge¹⁸⁴⁴ and understanding.

¹⁶ And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied⁷²³⁵ and increased⁶⁵⁰⁹ in the land,⁷⁷⁶ in those days,³¹¹⁷ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ they shall say⁵⁵⁹ no more, The ark⁷²⁷ of the covenant¹²⁸⁵ of the Lord:³⁰⁶⁸ neither shall it come⁵⁹²⁷ to mind:³⁸²⁰ neither shall they remember²¹⁴² it; neither shall they visit⁶⁴⁸⁵ it; neither shall that be done

^17C At that time⁶²⁵⁶ they shall call⁷¹²¹ Jerusalem³³⁸⁹ the throne³⁶⁷⁸ of the Lord;³⁰⁶⁸ and all the nations¹⁴⁷¹ shall be gathered⁶⁹⁶⁰ unto it, to the name⁸⁰³⁴ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ to Jerusalem:³³⁸⁹ neither shall they walk³²¹² any more after³¹⁰ the imagination⁸³⁰⁷ of their evil⁷⁴⁵¹ heart.

^18C In those days³¹¹⁷ the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Judah³⁰⁶³ shall walk³²¹² with the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ and they shall come⁹³⁵ together³¹⁶² out of the land⁷⁷⁶ of the north⁶⁸²⁸ to the land⁷⁷⁶ that I have given for an inheritance⁵¹⁵⁷ unto your fathers.

¹⁹ But I said,⁵⁵⁹ How shall I put⁷⁸⁹⁶ thee among the children,¹¹²¹ and give⁵⁴¹⁴ thee a pleasant²⁵³² land,⁷⁷⁶ a goodly⁶⁶⁴³ heritage⁵¹⁵⁹ of the hosts⁶⁶³⁵ of nations?¹⁴⁷¹ and I said,⁵⁵⁹ Thou shalt call⁷¹²¹ me, My father;¹ and shalt not turn away⁷⁷²⁵ from me.

²⁰ Surely⁴⁰³ as a wife⁸⁰² treacherously⁸⁹⁸ departeth from her husband,⁷⁴⁵³ so have ye dealt treacherously⁸⁹⁸ with me, O house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord.

²¹ A voice⁶⁹⁶³ was heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ upon the high places,⁸²⁰⁵ weeping¹⁰⁶⁵ and supplications⁸⁴⁶⁹ of the children¹¹²¹ of Israel:³⁴⁷⁸ for they have perverted⁵⁷⁵³ their way,¹⁸⁷⁰ and they have forgotten⁷⁹¹¹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ their God.

^22C Return,⁷⁷²⁵ ye backsliding⁷⁷²⁶ children,¹¹²¹ and I will heal⁷⁴⁹⁵ your backslidings.⁴⁸⁷⁸ Behold, we come⁸⁵⁷ unto thee; for thou art the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ our God.

^23C Truly⁴⁰³ in vain⁸²⁶⁷ is salvation hoped for from the hills,¹³⁸⁹ and from the multitude¹⁹⁹⁵ of mountains:²⁰²² truly⁴⁰³ in the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ our God⁴³⁰ is the salvation⁸⁶⁶⁸ of Israel.

²⁴ For shame¹³²² hath devoured³⁹⁸ the labour³⁰¹⁸ of our fathers¹ from our youth;⁵²⁷¹ their flocks⁶⁶²⁹ and their herds,¹²⁴¹ their sons¹¹²¹ and their daughters.

²⁵ We lie down⁷⁹⁰¹ in our shame,¹³²² and our confusion³⁶³⁹ covereth³⁶⁸⁰ us: for we have sinned²³⁹⁸ against the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ our God,⁴³⁰ we and our fathers,¹ from our youth⁵²⁷¹ even unto this day,³¹¹⁷ and have not obeyed⁸⁰⁸⁵ the voice⁶⁹⁶³ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ our God.

4If thou wilt return,⁷⁷²⁵ O Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ return⁷⁷²⁵ unto me: and if thou wilt put away⁵⁴⁹³ thine abominations⁸²⁵¹ out of my sight,⁶⁴⁴⁰ then shalt thou not remove.

^2C And thou shalt swear,⁷⁶⁵⁰ The Lord³⁰⁶⁸ liveth,²⁴¹⁶ in truth,⁵⁷¹ in judgment,⁴⁹⁴¹ and in righteousness;⁶⁶⁶⁶ and the nations¹⁴⁷¹ shall bless¹²⁸⁸ themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.

³ For thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ to the men³⁷⁶ of Judah³⁰⁶³ and Jerusalem,³³⁸⁹ Break up⁵²¹⁴ your fallow ground,⁵²¹⁵ and sow²²³² not among thorns.

^4C Circumcise⁴¹³⁵ yourselves to the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ and take away⁵⁴⁹³ the foreskins⁶¹⁹⁰ of your heart,³⁸²⁴ ye men³⁷⁶ of Judah³⁰⁶³ and inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of Jerusalem:³³⁸⁹ lest my fury²⁵³⁴ come forth³³¹⁸ like fire,⁷⁸⁴ and burn¹¹⁹⁷ that none can quench³⁵¹⁸ it, because⁶⁴⁴⁰ of the evil⁷⁴⁵⁵ of your doings.

⁵ Declare⁵⁰⁴⁶ ye in Judah,³⁰⁶³ and publish⁸⁰⁸⁵ in Jerusalem;³³⁸⁹ and say,⁵⁵⁹ Blow⁸⁶²⁸ ye the trumpet⁷⁷⁸² in the land:⁷⁷⁶ cry,⁷¹²¹ gather together,⁴³⁹⁰ and say,⁵⁵⁹ Assemble⁶²² yourselves, and let us go⁹³⁵ into the defenced⁴⁰¹³ cities.

⁶ Set up⁵³⁷⁵ the standard⁵²⁵¹ toward Zion:⁶⁷²⁶ retire,⁵⁷⁵⁶ stay⁵⁹⁷⁵ not: for I will bring⁹³⁵ evil⁷⁴⁵¹ from the north,⁶⁸²⁸ and a great¹⁴¹⁹ destruction.

⁷ The lion⁷³⁸ is come up⁵⁹²⁷ from his thicket,⁵⁴⁴¹ and the destroyer⁷⁸⁴³ of the Gentiles¹⁴⁷¹ is on his way;⁵²⁶⁵ he is gone forth³³¹⁸ from his place⁴⁷²⁵ to make⁷⁷⁶⁰ thy land⁷⁷⁶ desolate;⁸⁰⁴⁷ and thy cities⁵⁸⁹² shall be laid waste,⁵³²⁷ without an inhabitant.

⁸ For this gird²²⁹⁶ you with sackcloth,⁸²⁴² lament⁵⁵⁹⁴ and howl:³²¹³ for the fierce²⁷⁴⁰ anger⁶³⁹ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ is not turned back

⁹ And it shall come to pass at that day,³¹¹⁷ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ that the heart³⁸²⁰ of the king⁴⁴²⁸ shall perish,⁶ and the heart³⁸²⁰ of the princes;⁸²⁶⁹ and the priests³⁵⁴⁸ shall be astonished,⁸⁰⁷⁴ and the prophets⁵⁰³⁰ shall wonder.

¹⁰ Then said⁵⁵⁹ I, Ah,¹⁶² Lord¹³⁶ God!³⁰⁶⁹ surely⁴⁰³ thou hast greatly⁵³⁷⁷ deceived⁵³⁷⁷ this people⁵⁹⁷¹ and Jerusalem,³³⁸⁹ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Ye shall have peace;⁷⁹⁶⁵ whereas the sword²⁷¹⁹ reacheth⁵⁰⁶⁰ unto the soul.

¹¹ At that time⁶²⁵⁶ shall it be said⁵⁵⁹ to this people⁵⁹⁷¹ and to Jerusalem,³³⁸⁹ A dry⁶⁷⁰³ wind⁷³⁰⁷ of the high places⁸²⁰⁵ in the wilderness⁴⁰⁵⁷ toward¹⁸⁷⁰ the daughter¹³²³ of my people,⁵⁹⁷¹ not to fan,²²¹⁹ nor to cleanse,

¹² Even a full⁴³⁹² wind⁷³⁰⁷ from those places shall come⁹³⁵ unto me: now also will I give¹⁶⁹⁶ sentence

^13C Behold, he shall come up⁵⁹²⁷ as clouds,⁶⁰⁵¹ and his chariots⁴⁸¹⁸ shall be as a whirlwind:⁵⁴⁹² his horses⁵⁴⁸³ are swifter⁷⁰⁴³ than eagles.⁵⁴⁰⁴ Woe¹⁸⁸ unto us! for we are spoiled.

¹⁴ O Jerusalem,³³⁸⁹ wash³⁵²⁶ thine heart³⁸²⁰ from wickedness,⁷⁴⁵¹ that thou mayest be saved.³⁴⁶⁷ How long shall thy vain²⁰⁵ thoughts⁴²⁸⁴ lodge³⁸⁸⁵ within

^15C For a voice⁶⁹⁶³ declareth⁵⁰⁴⁶ from Dan,¹⁸³⁵ and publisheth⁸⁰⁸⁵ affliction²⁰⁵ from mount²⁰²² Ephraim.

¹⁶ Make ye mention²¹⁴² to the nations;¹⁴⁷¹ behold, publish⁸⁰⁸⁵ against Jerusalem,³³⁸⁹ that watchers⁵³⁴¹ come⁹³⁵ from a far⁴⁸⁰¹ country,⁷⁷⁶ and give out⁵⁴¹⁴ their voice⁶⁹⁶³ against the cities⁵⁸⁹² of Judah.

¹⁷ As keepers⁸¹⁰⁴ of a field,⁷⁷⁰⁴ are they against her round about;⁵⁴³⁹ because she hath been rebellious⁴⁷⁸⁴ against me, saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord.

¹⁸ Thy way¹⁸⁷⁰ and thy doings⁴⁶¹¹ have procured⁶²¹³ these things unto thee; this is thy wickedness,⁷⁴⁵¹ because it is bitter,⁴⁷⁵¹ because it reacheth⁵⁰⁶⁰ unto thine heart.

¹⁹ My bowels,⁴⁵⁷⁸ my bowels!⁴⁵⁷⁸ I am pained^23423176 at my very⁷⁰²³ heart;³⁸²⁰ my heart³⁸²⁰ maketh a noise¹⁹⁹³ in me; I cannot hold my peace,²⁷⁹⁰ because thou hast heard,⁸⁰⁸⁵ O my soul,⁵³¹⁵ the sound⁶⁹⁶³ of the trumpet,⁷⁷⁸² the alarm⁸⁶⁴³ of war.

²⁰ Destruction⁷⁶⁶⁷ upon destruction⁷⁶⁶⁷ is cried;⁷¹²¹ for the whole land⁷⁷⁶ is spoiled:⁷⁷⁰³ suddenly⁶⁵⁹⁷ are my tents¹⁶⁸ spoiled,⁷⁷⁰³ and my curtains³⁴⁰⁷ in a moment.

²¹ How long shall I see⁷²⁰⁰ the standard,⁵²⁵¹ and hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ the sound⁶⁹⁶³ of the trumpet?

²² For my people⁵⁹⁷¹ is foolish,¹⁹¹ they have not known³⁰⁴⁵ me; they are sottish⁵⁵³⁰ children,¹¹²¹ and they have none understanding:⁹⁹⁵ they are wise²⁴⁵⁰ to do evil,⁷⁴⁸⁹ but to do good³¹⁹⁰ they have no knowledge.

^23C I beheld⁷²⁰⁰ the earth,⁷⁷⁶ and, lo, it was without form,⁸⁴¹⁴ and void;⁹²² and the heavens,⁸⁰⁶⁴ and they had no light.

^24C I beheld⁷²⁰⁰ the mountains,²⁰²² and, lo, they trembled,⁷⁴⁹³ and all the hills¹³⁸⁹ moved lightly.

²⁵ I beheld,⁷²⁰⁰ and, lo, there was no man,¹²⁰ and all the birds⁵⁷⁷⁵ of the heavens⁸⁰⁶⁴ were fled.

²⁶ I beheld,⁷²⁰⁰ and, lo, the fruitful place³⁷⁵⁹ was a wilderness,⁴⁰⁵⁷ and all the cities⁵⁸⁹² thereof were broken down⁵⁴²² at the presence⁶⁴⁴⁰ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ and by his fierce²⁷⁴⁰ anger.

²⁷ For thus hath the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said,⁵⁵⁹ The whole land⁷⁷⁶ shall be desolate;⁸⁰⁷⁷ yet will I not make⁶²¹³ a full end.

²⁸ For this shall the earth⁷⁷⁶ mourn,⁵⁶ and the heavens⁸⁰⁶⁴ above⁴⁶⁰⁵ be black:⁶⁹³⁷ because I have spoken¹⁶⁹⁶ it, I have purposed²¹⁶¹ it, and will not repent,⁵¹⁶² neither will I turn back

^29C The whole city⁵⁸⁹² shall flee¹²⁷² for the noise⁶⁹⁶³ of the horsemen⁶⁵⁷¹ and bowmen;^71987411 they shall go⁹³⁵ into thickets,⁵⁶⁴⁵ and climb up⁵⁹²⁷ upon the rocks:³⁷¹⁰ every city⁵⁸⁹² shall be forsaken,⁵⁸⁰⁰ and not a man³⁷⁶ dwell³⁴²⁷ therein.

^30C And when thou art spoiled,⁷⁷⁰³ what wilt thou do?⁶²¹³ Though thou clothest³⁸⁴⁷ thyself with crimson,⁸¹⁴⁴ though thou deckest⁵⁷¹⁰ thee with ornaments⁵⁷¹⁶ of gold,²⁰⁹¹ though thou rentest⁷¹⁶⁷ thy face⁵⁸⁶⁹ with painting,⁶³²⁰ in vain⁷⁷²³ shalt thou make thyself fair;³³⁰² thy lovers⁵⁶⁸⁹ will despise³⁹⁸⁸ thee, they will seek¹²⁴⁵ thy life.

^31C For I have heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ a voice⁶⁹⁶³ as of a woman in travail,²⁴⁷⁰ and the anguish⁶⁸⁶⁹ as of her that bringeth forth her first child,¹⁰⁶⁹ the voice⁶⁹⁶³ of the daughter¹³²³ of Zion,⁶⁷²⁶ that bewaileth³³⁰⁶ herself, that spreadeth⁶⁵⁶⁶ her hands,³⁷⁰⁹ saying, Woe¹⁸⁸ is me now! for my soul⁵³¹⁵ is wearied⁵⁸⁸⁸ because of murderers.

5Run ye to and fro⁷⁷⁵¹ through the streets²³⁵¹ of Jerusalem,³³⁸⁹ and see⁷²⁰⁰ now, and know,³⁰⁴⁵ and seek¹²⁴⁵ in the broad places⁷³³⁹ thereof, if ye can find⁴⁶⁷² a man,³⁷⁶ if there be³⁴²⁶ any that executeth⁶²¹³ judgment,⁴⁹⁴¹ that seeketh¹²⁴⁵ the truth;⁵³⁰ and I will pardon

² And though they say,⁵⁵⁹ The Lord³⁰⁶⁸ liveth;²⁴¹⁶ surely they swear⁷⁶⁵⁰ falsely.

³ O Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ are not thine eyes⁵⁸⁶⁹ upon the truth?⁵³⁰ thou hast stricken⁵²²¹ them, but they have not grieved;²³⁴² thou hast consumed³⁶¹⁵ them, but they have refused³⁹⁸⁵ to receive³⁹⁴⁷ correction:⁴¹⁴⁸ they have made their faces⁶⁴⁴⁰ harder²³⁸⁸ than a rock;⁵⁵⁵³ they have refused³⁹⁸⁵ to return.

⁴ Therefore I said,⁵⁵⁹ Surely these are poor;¹⁸⁰⁰ they are foolish:²⁹⁷³ for they know³⁰⁴⁵ not the way¹⁸⁷⁰ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ nor the judgment⁴⁹⁴¹ of their God.

⁵ I will get³²¹² me unto the great men,¹⁴¹⁹ and will speak¹⁶⁹⁶ unto them; for they have known³⁰⁴⁵ the way¹⁸⁷⁰ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ and the judgment⁴⁹⁴¹ of their God:⁴³⁰ but these have altogether³¹⁶² broken⁷⁶⁶⁵ the yoke,⁵⁹²³ and burst⁵⁴²³ the bonds.

⁶ Wherefore a lion⁷³⁸ out of the forest³²⁹³ shall slay⁵²²¹ them, and a wolf²⁰⁶¹ of the evenings⁶¹⁶⁰ shall spoil⁷⁷⁰³ them, a leopard⁵²⁴⁶ shall watch⁸²⁴⁵ over their cities:⁵⁸⁹² every one that goeth out³³¹⁸ thence shall²⁰⁰⁷ be torn in pieces:²⁹⁶³ because their transgressions⁶⁵⁸⁸ are many,⁷²³¹ and their backslidings⁴⁸⁷⁸ are increased.

⁷ How³³⁵ shall I pardon⁵⁵⁴⁵ thee for this?²⁰⁶³ thy children¹¹²¹ have forsaken⁵⁸⁰⁰ me, and sworn⁷⁶⁵⁰ by them that are no³⁸⁰⁸ gods:⁴³⁰ when I had fed them to the full,⁷⁶⁵⁰ they then committed adultery,⁵⁰⁰³ and assembled themselves by troops¹⁴¹³ in the harlots'²¹⁸¹ houses.

⁸ They were as fed²¹⁰⁹ horses⁵⁴⁸³ in the morning:⁷⁹⁰⁴ every one³⁷⁶ neighed⁶⁶⁷⁰ after his neighbour's⁷⁴⁵³ wife.

⁹ Shall I not visit⁶⁴⁸⁵ for these things? saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord:³⁰⁶⁸ and shall not my soul⁵³¹⁵ be avenged⁵³⁵⁸ on such a nation

¹⁰ Go ye up⁵⁹²⁷ upon her walls,⁸²⁸⁴ and destroy;⁷⁸⁴³ but make⁶²¹³ not a full end:³⁶¹⁷ take away⁵⁴⁹³ her battlements;⁵¹⁸⁹ for they are not the Lord’s.

¹¹ For the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ and the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Judah³⁰⁶³ have dealt very⁸⁹⁸ treacherously⁸⁹⁸ against me, saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord.

¹² They have belied³⁵⁸⁴ the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ and said,⁵⁵⁹ It is not he; neither shall evil⁷⁴⁵¹ come⁹³⁵ upon us; neither shall we see⁷²⁰⁰ sword²⁷¹⁹ nor famine:

¹³ And the prophets⁵⁰³⁰ shall become wind,⁷³⁰⁷ and the word¹⁶⁹⁶ is not in them: thus shall it be done

¹⁴ Wherefore thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ God⁴³⁰ of hosts,⁶⁶³⁵ Because ye speak¹⁶⁹⁶ this word,¹⁶⁹⁷ behold, I will make⁵⁴¹⁴ my words¹⁶⁹⁷ in thy mouth⁶³¹⁰ fire,⁷⁸⁴ and this people⁵⁹⁷¹ wood,⁶⁰⁸⁶ and it shall devour

¹⁵ Lo, I will bring⁹³⁵ a nation¹⁴⁷¹ upon you from far,⁴⁸⁰¹ O house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord:³⁰⁶⁸ it is a mighty³⁸⁶ nation,¹⁴⁷¹ it is an ancient⁵⁷⁶⁹ nation,¹⁴⁷¹ a nation¹⁴⁷¹ whose language³⁹⁵⁶ thou knowest³⁰⁴⁵ not, neither understandest⁸⁰⁸⁵ what they say.

¹⁶ Their quiver⁸²⁷ is as an open⁶⁶⁰⁵ sepulchre,⁶⁹¹³ they are all mighty men.

¹⁷ And they shall eat up³⁹⁸ thine harvest,⁷¹⁰⁵ and thy bread,³⁸⁹⁹ which thy sons¹¹²¹ and thy daughters¹³²³ should eat:³⁹⁸ they shall eat up³⁹⁸ thy flocks⁶⁶²⁹ and thine herds:¹²⁴¹ they shall eat up³⁹⁸ thy vines¹⁶¹² and thy fig trees:⁸³⁸⁴ they shall impoverish⁷⁵⁶⁷ thy fenced⁴⁰¹³ cities,⁵⁸⁹² wherein thou²⁰⁰⁷ trustedst,⁹⁸² with the sword.

¹⁸ Nevertheless in those days,³¹¹⁷ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ I will not make⁶²¹³ a full end

¹⁹ And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say,⁵⁵⁹ Wherefore^84784100 doeth⁶²¹³ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ our God⁴³⁰ all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer⁵⁵⁹ them, Like as ye have forsaken⁵⁸⁰⁰ me, and served⁵⁶⁴⁷ strange⁵²³⁶ gods⁴³⁰ in your land,⁷⁷⁶ so shall ye serve⁵⁶⁴⁷ strangers²¹¹⁴ in a land

²⁰ Declare⁵⁰⁴⁶ this in the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Jacob,³²⁹⁰ and publish⁸⁰⁸⁵ it in Judah,³⁰⁶³ saying,

²¹ Hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ now this, O foolish⁵⁵³⁰ people,⁵⁹⁷¹ and without understanding;³⁸²⁰ which have eyes,⁵⁸⁶⁹ and see⁷²⁰⁰ not; which have ears,²⁴¹ and hear

²² Fear³³⁷² ye not me? saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord:³⁰⁶⁸ will ye not tremble²³⁴² at my presence,⁶⁴⁴⁰ which have placed⁷⁷⁶⁰ the sand²³⁴⁴ for the bound¹³⁶⁶ of the sea³²²⁰ by a perpetual⁵⁷⁶⁹ decree,²⁷⁰⁶ that it cannot pass⁵⁶⁷⁴ it: and though the waves¹⁵³⁰ thereof toss¹⁶⁰⁷ themselves, yet can they not prevail;³²⁰¹ though they roar,¹⁹⁹³ yet can they not pass over

²³ But this people⁵⁹⁷¹ hath a revolting⁵⁶³⁷ and a rebellious⁴⁷⁸⁴ heart;³⁸²⁰ they are revolted⁵⁴⁹³ and gone.

²⁴ Neither say⁵⁵⁹ they in their heart,³⁸²⁴ Let us now fear³³⁷² the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ our God,⁴³⁰ that giveth⁵⁴¹⁴ rain,¹⁶⁵³ both the former³¹³⁸ and the latter,⁴⁴⁵⁶ in his season:⁶²⁵⁶ he reserveth⁸¹⁰⁴ unto us the appointed²⁷⁰⁸ weeks⁷⁶²⁰ of the harvest.

²⁵ Your iniquities⁵⁷⁷¹ have turned away⁵¹⁸⁶ these things, and your sins²⁴⁰³ have withholden⁴⁵¹³ good

²⁶ For among my people⁵⁹⁷¹ are found⁴⁶⁷² wicked⁷⁵⁶³ men: they lay wait,⁷⁷⁸⁹ as he that setteth⁷⁹¹⁸ snares;³³⁵³ they set⁵³²⁴ a trap,⁴⁸⁸⁹ they catch³⁹²⁰ men.

²⁷ As a cage³⁶¹⁹ is full⁴³⁹² of birds,⁵⁷⁷⁵ so are their houses¹⁰⁰⁴ full⁴³⁹² of deceit:⁴⁸²⁰ therefore they are become great,¹⁴³¹ and waxen rich.

²⁸ They are waxen fat,⁸⁰⁸⁰ they shine:⁶²⁴⁵ yea, they overpass⁵⁶⁷⁴ the deeds¹⁶⁹⁷ of the wicked:⁷⁴⁵¹ they judge¹⁷⁷⁷ not the cause,¹⁷⁷⁹ the cause of the fatherless,³⁴⁹⁰ yet they prosper;⁶⁷⁴³ and the right⁴⁹⁴¹ of the needy³⁴ do they not judge.

²⁹ Shall I not visit⁶⁴⁸⁵ for these things? saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord:³⁰⁶⁸ shall not my soul⁵³¹⁵ be avenged⁵³⁵⁸ on such a nation

³⁰ A wonderful⁸⁰⁴⁷ and horrible thing⁸¹⁸⁶ is committed¹⁹⁶¹ in the land;

^31C The prophets⁵⁰³⁰ prophesy⁵⁰¹² falsely,⁸²⁶⁷ and the priests³⁵⁴⁸ bear rule⁷²⁸⁷ by their means;³⁰²⁷ and my people⁵⁹⁷¹ love¹⁵⁷ to have it so: and what will ye do⁶²¹³ in the end

6O ye children¹¹²¹ of Benjamin,¹¹⁴⁴ gather yourselves to flee⁵⁷⁵⁶ out of the midst⁷¹³⁰ of Jerusalem,³³⁸⁹ and blow⁸⁶²⁸ the trumpet⁷⁷⁸² in Tekoa,⁸⁶²⁰ and set up⁵³⁷⁵ a sign⁴⁸⁶⁴ of fire in Bethhaccerem:¹⁰²¹ for evil⁷⁴⁵¹ appeareth⁸²⁵⁹ out of the north,⁶⁸²⁸ and great¹⁴¹⁹ destruction.

^2C I have likened¹⁸²⁰ the daughter¹³²³ of Zion⁶⁷²⁶ to a comely⁵¹¹⁶ and delicate

³ The shepherds⁷⁴⁶² with their flocks⁵⁷³⁹ shall come⁹³⁵ unto her; they shall pitch⁸⁶²⁸ their tents¹⁶⁸ against her round about;⁵⁴³⁹ they shall feed⁷⁴⁶² every one³⁷⁶ in his place.

⁴ Prepare⁶⁹⁴² ye war⁴⁴²¹ against her; arise,⁶⁹⁶⁵ and let us go up⁵⁹²⁷ at noon.⁶⁶⁷² Woe¹⁸⁸ unto us! for the day³¹¹⁷ goeth away,⁶⁴³⁷ for the shadows⁶⁷⁵² of the evening⁶¹⁵³ are stretched out.

⁵ Arise,⁶⁹⁶⁵ and let us go⁵⁹²⁷ by night,³⁹¹⁵ and let us destroy⁷⁸⁴³ her palaces.

⁶ For thus hath the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ of hosts⁶⁶³⁵ said,⁵⁵⁹ Hew ye down³⁷⁷² trees,⁶⁰⁹⁷ and cast⁸²¹⁰ a mount⁵⁵⁵⁰ against Jerusalem:³³⁸⁹ this is the city⁵⁸⁹² to be visited;⁶⁴⁸⁵ she is wholly oppression⁶²³³ in the midst

⁷ As a fountain⁹⁵³ casteth out⁶⁹⁷⁹ her waters,⁴³²⁵ so she casteth out⁶⁹⁷⁹ her wickedness:⁷⁴⁵¹ violence²⁵⁵⁵ and spoil⁷⁷⁰¹ is heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ in her; before me⁶⁴⁴⁰ continually⁸⁵⁴⁸ is grief²⁴⁸³ and wounds.

⁸ Be thou instructed,³²⁵⁶ O Jerusalem,³³⁸⁹ lest my soul⁵³¹⁵ depart³³⁶³ from thee; lest I make⁷⁷⁶⁰ thee desolate,⁸⁰⁷⁷ a land⁷⁷⁶ not inhabited.

⁹ Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ of hosts,⁶⁶³⁵ They shall throughly⁵⁹⁵³ glean⁵⁹⁵³ the remnant⁷⁶¹¹ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ as a vine:¹⁶¹² turn back⁷⁷²⁵ thine hand³⁰²⁷ as a grapegatherer¹²¹⁹ into the baskets.

¹⁰ To whom shall I speak,¹⁶⁹⁶ and give warning,⁵⁷⁴⁹ that they may hear?⁸⁰⁸⁵ behold, their ear²⁴¹ is uncircumcised,⁶¹⁸⁹ and they cannot³²⁰¹ hearken:⁷¹⁸¹ behold, the word¹⁶⁹⁷ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ is unto them a reproach;²⁷⁸¹ they have no delight

¹¹ Therefore I am full⁴³⁹² of the fury²⁵³⁴ of the Lord;³⁰⁶⁸ I am weary³⁸¹¹ with holding in:³⁵⁵⁷ I will pour it out⁸²¹⁰ upon the children⁵⁷⁶⁸ abroad,²³⁵¹ and upon the assembly⁵⁴⁷⁵ of young men⁹⁷⁰ together:³¹⁶² for even the husband³⁷⁶ with the wife⁸⁰² shall be taken,³⁹²⁰ the aged²²⁰⁵ with him that is full⁴³⁹⁰ of days.

^12C And their houses¹⁰⁰⁴ shall be turned⁵⁴³⁷ unto others,³¹² with their fields⁷⁷⁰⁴ and wives⁸⁰² together:³¹⁶² for I will stretch out⁵¹⁸⁶ my hand³⁰²⁷ upon the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of the land,⁷⁷⁶ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord.

¹³ For from the least⁶⁹⁹⁶ of them even unto the greatest¹⁴¹⁹ of them every one is given¹²¹⁴ to covetousness;¹²¹⁵ and from the prophet⁵⁰³⁰ even unto the priest³⁵⁴⁸ every one dealeth⁶²¹³ falsely.

^14C They have healed⁷⁴⁹⁵ also the hurt⁷⁶⁶⁷ of the daughter¹³²³ of my people⁵⁹⁷¹ slightly,⁷⁰⁴³ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Peace,⁷⁹⁶⁵ peace;⁷⁹⁶⁵ when there is no peace.

¹⁵ Were they ashamed³⁰⁰¹ when they had committed⁶²¹³ abomination?⁸⁴⁴¹ nay,¹⁵⁷¹ they were not at all⁹⁵⁴ ashamed,⁹⁵⁴ neither¹⁵⁷¹ could³⁰⁴⁵ they blush:³⁶³⁷ therefore they shall fall⁵³⁰⁷ among them that fall:⁵³⁰⁷ at the time⁶²⁵⁶ that I visit⁶⁴⁸⁵ them they shall be cast down,³⁷⁸² saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord.

^16C Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ Stand⁵⁹⁷⁵ ye in the ways,¹⁸⁷⁰ and see,⁷²⁰⁰ and ask⁷⁵⁹² for the old⁵⁷⁶⁹ paths,⁵⁴¹⁰ where is the good²⁸⁹⁶ way,¹⁸⁷⁰ and walk³²¹² therein, and ye shall find⁴⁶⁷² rest⁴⁷⁷¹ for your souls.⁵³¹⁵ But they said,⁵⁵⁹ We will not walk

^17C Also I set⁶⁹⁶⁵ watchmen⁶⁸²² over you, saying, Hearken⁷¹⁸¹ to the sound⁶⁹⁶³ of the trumpet.⁷⁷⁸² But they said,⁵⁵⁹ We will not hearken.

¹⁸ Therefore hear,⁸⁰⁸⁵ ye nations,¹⁴⁷¹ and know,³⁰⁴⁵ O congregation,

^19C Hear,⁸⁰⁸⁵ O earth:⁷⁷⁶ behold, I will bring⁹³⁵ evil⁷⁴⁵¹ upon this people,⁵⁹⁷¹ even the fruit⁶⁵²⁹ of their thoughts,⁴²⁸⁴ because they have not hearkened⁷¹⁸¹ unto my words,¹⁶⁹⁷ nor to my law,⁸⁴⁵¹ but rejected

^20C To what purpose cometh⁹³⁵ there to me incense³⁸²⁸ from Sheba,⁷⁶¹⁴ and the sweet²⁸⁹⁶ cane⁷⁰⁷⁰ from a far⁴⁸⁰¹ country?⁷⁷⁶ your burnt offerings⁵⁹³⁰ are not acceptable,⁷⁵²² nor your sacrifices²⁰⁷⁷ sweet

²¹ Therefore thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ Behold, I will lay⁵⁴¹⁴ stumblingblocks⁴³⁸³ before this people,⁵⁹⁷¹ and the fathers¹ and the sons¹¹²¹ together³¹⁶² shall fall³⁷⁸² upon them; the neighbour⁷⁹³⁴ and his friend⁷⁴⁵³ shall perish.

²² Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ Behold, a people⁵⁹⁷¹ cometh⁹³⁵ from the north⁶⁸²⁸ country,⁷⁷⁶ and a great¹⁴¹⁹ nation¹⁴⁷¹ shall be raised⁵⁷⁸² from the sides³⁴¹¹ of the earth.

^23C They shall lay hold²³⁸⁸ on bow⁷¹⁹⁸ and spear;³⁵⁹¹ they are cruel,³⁹⁴ and have no mercy;⁷³⁵⁵ their voice⁶⁹⁶³ roareth¹⁹⁹³ like the sea;³²²⁰ and they ride⁷³⁹² upon horses,⁵⁴⁸³ set in array⁶¹⁸⁶ as men³⁷⁶ for war⁴⁴²¹ against thee, O daughter¹³²³ of Zion.

²⁴ We have heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ the fame⁸⁰⁸⁹ thereof: our hands³⁰²⁷ wax feeble:⁷⁵⁰³ anguish⁶⁸⁶⁹ hath taken hold²³⁸⁸ of us, and pain,²⁴²⁷ as of a woman in travail.

²⁵ Go not forth³³¹⁸ into the field,⁷⁷⁰⁴ nor walk³²¹² by the way;¹⁸⁷⁰ for the sword²⁷¹⁹ of the enemy³⁴¹ and fear⁴⁰³² is on every side.

²⁶ O daughter¹³²³ of my people,⁵⁹⁷¹ gird²²⁹⁶ thee with sackcloth,⁸²⁴² and wallow⁶⁴²⁸ thyself in ashes:⁶⁶⁵ make⁶²¹³ thee mourning,⁶⁰ as for an only son,³¹⁷³ most bitter⁸⁵⁶³ lamentation:⁴⁵⁵³ for the spoiler⁷⁷⁰³ shall suddenly⁶⁵⁹⁷ come

²⁷ I have set⁵⁴¹⁴ thee for a tower⁹⁶⁹ and a fortress⁴⁰¹³ among my people,⁵⁹⁷¹ that thou mayest know³⁰⁴⁵ and try⁹⁷⁴ their way.

²⁸ They are all grievous⁵⁴⁹³ revolters,⁵⁶³⁷ walking¹⁹⁸⁰ with slanders:⁷⁴⁰⁰ they are brass⁵¹⁷⁸ and iron;¹²⁷⁰ they are all corrupters.

²⁹ The bellows⁴⁶⁴⁷ are burned,²⁷⁸⁷ the lead⁵⁷⁷⁷ is consumed⁸⁵⁵² of the fire;⁸⁰⁰⁷⁸⁴ the founder⁶⁸⁸⁴ melteth⁶⁸⁸⁴ in vain:⁷⁷²³ for the wicked⁷⁴⁵¹ are not plucked away.

³⁰ Reprobate³⁹⁸⁸ silver³⁷⁰¹ shall men call⁷¹²¹ them, because the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ hath rejected

7The word¹⁶⁹⁷ that came to Jeremiah³⁴¹⁴ from the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ saying,

² Stand⁵⁹⁷⁵ in the gate⁸¹⁷⁹ of the Lord’s³⁰⁶⁸ house,¹⁰⁰⁴ and proclaim⁷¹²¹ there this word,¹⁶⁹⁷ and say,⁵⁵⁹ Hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ the word¹⁶⁹⁷ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ all ye of Judah,³⁰⁶³ that enter in⁹³⁵ at these gates⁸¹⁷⁹ to worship⁷⁸¹² the Lord.

^3C Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ of hosts,⁶⁶³⁵ the God⁴³⁰ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ Amend³¹⁹⁰ your ways¹⁸⁷⁰ and your doings,⁴⁶¹¹ and I will cause you to dwell⁷⁹³¹ in this place.

^4C Trust⁹⁸² ye not in lying⁸²⁶⁷ words,¹⁶⁹⁷ saying,⁵⁵⁹ The temple¹⁹⁶⁴ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ The temple¹⁹⁶⁴ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ The temple¹⁹⁶⁴ of the Lord,

⁵ For if ye throughly³¹⁹⁰ amend³¹⁹⁰ your ways¹⁸⁷⁰ and your doings;⁴⁶¹¹ if ye throughly⁶²¹³ execute⁶²¹³ judgment⁴⁹⁴¹ between a man³⁷⁶ and his neighbour;

⁶ If ye oppress⁶²³¹ not the stranger,¹⁶¹⁶ the fatherless,³⁴⁹⁰ and the widow,⁴⁹⁰ and shed⁸²¹⁰ not innocent⁵³⁵⁵ blood¹⁸¹⁸ in this place,⁴⁷²⁵ neither walk³²¹² after³¹⁰ other³¹² gods⁴³⁰ to your hurt:

⁷ Then will I cause you to dwell⁷⁹³¹ in this place,⁴⁷²⁵ in the land⁷⁷⁶ that I gave⁵⁴¹⁴ to your fathers,¹ for⁵⁷⁰⁴ ever⁵⁷⁶⁹ and ever.

⁸ Behold, ye trust⁹⁸² in lying⁸²⁶⁷ words,¹⁶⁹⁷ that cannot profit.

^9C Will ye steal,¹⁵⁸⁹ murder,⁷⁵²³ and commit adultery,⁵⁰⁰³ and swear⁷⁶⁵⁰ falsely,⁸²⁶⁷ and burn incense⁶⁹⁹⁹ unto Baal,¹¹⁶⁸ and walk¹⁹⁸⁰ after³¹⁰ other³¹² gods⁴³⁰ whom ye know

¹⁰ And come⁹³⁵ and stand⁵⁹⁷⁵ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ me in this house,¹⁰⁰⁴ which is called⁷¹²¹ by my name,⁸⁰³⁴ and say,⁵⁵⁹ We are delivered⁵³³⁷ to do⁶²¹³ all these abominations?

¹¹ Is this house,¹⁰⁰⁴ which is called⁷¹²¹ by my name,⁸⁰³⁴ become a den⁴⁶³¹ of robbers⁶⁵³⁰ in your eyes?⁵⁸⁶⁹ Behold, even I have seen⁷²⁰⁰ it, saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord.

¹² But go³²¹² ye now unto my place⁴⁷²⁵ which was in Shiloh,⁷⁸⁸⁷ where I set⁷⁹³¹ my name⁸⁰³⁴ at the first,⁷²²³ and see⁷²⁰⁰ what I did⁶²¹³ to it for⁶⁴⁴⁰ the wickedness⁷⁴⁵¹ of my people⁵⁹⁷¹ Israel.

¹³ And now, because ye have done⁶²¹³ all these works,⁴⁶³⁹ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ and I spake¹⁶⁹⁶ unto you, rising up early⁷⁹²⁵ and speaking,¹⁶⁹⁶ but ye heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ not; and I called⁷¹²¹ you, but ye answered

¹⁴ Therefore will I do⁶²¹³ unto this house,¹⁰⁰⁴ which is called⁷¹²¹ by my name,⁸⁰³⁴ wherein ye trust,⁹⁸² and unto the place⁴⁷²⁵ which I gave⁵⁴¹⁴ to you and to your fathers,¹ as I have done⁶²¹³ to Shiloh.

¹⁵ And I will cast you out⁷⁹⁹³ of my sight,⁶⁴⁴⁰ as I have cast out⁷⁹⁹³ all your brethren,²⁵¹ even the whole seed²²³³ of Ephraim.

¹⁶ Therefore pray⁶⁴¹⁹ not thou for this people,⁵⁹⁷¹ neither lift up⁵³⁷⁵ cry⁷⁴⁴⁰ nor prayer⁸⁶⁰⁵ for them,¹¹⁵⁷ neither make intercession⁶²⁹³ to me: for I will not hear

¹⁷ Seest⁷²⁰⁰ thou not what they do⁶²¹³ in the cities⁵⁸⁹² of Judah³⁰⁶³ and in the streets²³⁵¹ of Jerusalem?

^18C The children¹¹²¹ gather³⁹⁵⁰ wood,⁶⁰⁸⁶ and the fathers¹ kindle¹¹⁹⁷ the fire,⁷⁸⁴ and the women⁸⁰² knead³⁸⁸⁸ their dough,¹²¹⁷ to make⁶²¹³ cakes³⁵⁶¹ to the queen⁴⁴⁴⁶ of heaven,⁸⁰⁶⁴ and to pour out⁵²⁵⁸ drink offerings⁵²⁶² unto other³¹² gods,⁴³⁰ that they may provoke me to anger.

¹⁹ Do they provoke me to anger?³⁷⁰⁷ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord:³⁰⁶⁸ do they not provoke themselves to the confusion¹³²² of their own faces?

²⁰ Therefore thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord¹³⁶ God;³⁰⁶⁹ Behold, mine anger⁶³⁹ and my fury²⁵³⁴ shall be poured out⁵⁴¹³ upon this place,⁴⁷²⁵ upon man,¹²⁰ and upon beast,⁹²⁹ and upon the trees⁶⁰⁸⁶ of the field,⁷⁷⁰⁴ and upon the fruit⁶⁵²⁹ of the ground;¹²⁷ and it shall burn,¹¹⁹⁷ and shall not be quenched.

²¹ Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ of hosts,⁶⁶³⁵ the God⁴³⁰ of Israel;³⁴⁷⁸ Put⁵⁵⁹⁵ your burnt offerings⁵⁹³⁰ unto your sacrifices,²⁰⁷⁷ and eat³⁹⁸ flesh.

²² For I spake¹⁶⁹⁶ not unto your fathers,¹ nor commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ them in the day³¹¹⁷ that I brought them out³³¹⁸ of the land⁷⁷⁶ of Egypt,⁴⁷¹⁴ concerning¹⁶⁹⁷ burnt offerings⁵⁹³⁰ or sacrifices:

²³ But this thing¹⁶⁹⁷ commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ I them, saying,⁵⁵⁹ Obey⁸⁰⁸⁵ my voice,⁶⁹⁶³ and I will be your God,⁴³⁰ and ye shall be my people:⁵⁹⁷¹ and walk¹⁹⁸⁰ ye in all the ways¹⁸⁷⁰ that I have commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ you, that it may be well

²⁴ But they hearkened⁸⁰⁸⁵ not, nor inclined⁵¹⁸⁶ their ear,²⁴¹ but walked³²¹² in the counsels⁴¹⁵⁶ and in the imagination⁸³⁰⁷ of their evil⁷⁴⁵¹ heart,³⁸²⁰ and went backward,²⁶⁸ and not forward.

^25C Since the day³¹¹⁷ that your fathers¹ came forth out³³¹⁸ of the land⁷⁷⁶ of Egypt⁴⁷¹⁴ unto this day³¹¹⁷ I have even sent⁷⁹⁷¹ unto you all my servants⁵⁶⁵⁰ the prophets,⁵⁰³⁰ daily³¹¹⁷ rising up early⁷⁹²⁵ and sending

^26C Yet they hearkened⁸⁰⁸⁵ not unto me, nor inclined⁵¹⁸⁶ their ear,²⁴¹ but hardened⁷¹⁸⁵ their neck:⁶²⁰³ they did worse⁷⁴⁸⁹ than their fathers.

²⁷ Therefore thou shalt speak¹⁶⁹⁶ all these words¹⁶⁹⁷ unto them; but they will not hearken⁸⁰⁸⁵ to thee: thou shalt also call⁷¹²¹ unto them; but they will not answer

²⁸ But thou shalt say⁵⁵⁹ unto them, This is a nation¹⁴⁷¹ that obeyeth⁸⁰⁸⁵ not the voice⁶⁹⁶³ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ their God,⁴³⁰ nor receiveth³⁹⁴⁷ correction:⁴¹⁴⁸ truth⁵³⁰ is perished,⁶ and is cut off³⁷⁷² from their mouth.

²⁹ Cut off¹⁴⁹⁴ thine hair,⁵¹⁴⁵ O Jerusalem, and cast it away,⁷⁹⁹³ and take up⁵³⁷⁵ a lamentation⁷⁰¹⁵ on high places;⁸²⁰⁵ for the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ hath rejected³⁹⁸⁸ and forsaken⁵²⁰³ the generation¹⁷⁵⁵ of his wrath.

³⁰ For the children¹¹²¹ of Judah³⁰⁶³ have done⁶²¹³ evil⁷⁴⁵¹ in my sight,⁵⁸⁶⁹ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord:³⁰⁶⁸ they have set⁷⁷⁶⁰ their abominations⁸²⁵¹ in the house¹⁰⁰⁴ which is called⁷¹²¹ by my name,⁸⁰³⁴ to pollute

^31C And they have built¹¹²⁹ the high places¹¹¹⁶ of Tophet,⁸⁶¹² which is in the valley¹⁵¹⁶ of the son¹¹²¹ of Hinnom,²⁰¹¹ to burn⁸³¹³ their sons¹¹²¹ and their daughters¹³²³ in the fire;⁷⁸⁴ which I commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ them not, neither came⁵⁹²⁷ it into my heart.

³² Therefore, behold, the days³¹¹⁷ come,⁹³⁵ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ that it shall no more be called⁵⁵⁹ Tophet,⁸⁶¹² nor the valley¹⁵¹⁶ of the son¹¹²¹ of Hinnom,²⁰¹¹ but the valley¹⁵¹⁶ of slaughter:²⁰²⁸ for they shall bury⁶⁹¹² in Tophet,⁸⁶¹² till there be no³⁶⁹ place.

³³ And the carcases⁵⁰³⁸ of this people⁵⁹⁷¹ shall be meat³⁹⁷⁸ for the fowls⁵⁷⁷⁵ of the heaven,⁸⁰⁶⁴ and for the beasts⁹²⁹ of the earth;⁷⁷⁶ and none shall fray them away.

³⁴ Then will I cause to cease⁷⁶⁷³ from the cities⁵⁸⁹² of Judah,³⁰⁶³ and from the streets²³⁵¹ of Jerusalem,³³⁸⁹ the voice⁶⁹⁶³ of mirth,⁸³⁴² and the voice⁶⁹⁶³ of gladness,⁸⁰⁵⁷ the voice⁶⁹⁶³ of the bridegroom,²⁸⁶⁰ and the voice⁶⁹⁶³ of the bride:³⁶¹⁸ for the land⁷⁷⁶ shall be desolate.

8At that time,⁶²⁵⁶ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ they shall bring out³³¹⁸ the bones⁶¹⁰⁶ of the kings⁴⁴²⁸ of Judah,³⁰⁶³ and the bones⁶¹⁰⁶ of his princes,⁸²⁶⁹ and the bones⁶¹⁰⁶ of the priests,³⁵⁴⁸ and the bones⁶¹⁰⁶ of the prophets,⁵⁰³⁰ and the bones⁶¹⁰⁶ of the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of Jerusalem,³³⁸⁹ out of their graves:

² And they shall spread⁷⁸⁴⁹ them before the sun,⁸¹²¹ and the moon,³³⁹⁴ and all the host⁶⁶³⁵ of heaven,⁸⁰⁶⁴ whom they have loved,¹⁵⁷ and whom they have served,⁵⁶⁴⁷ and after³¹⁰ whom they have walked,¹⁹⁸⁰ and whom they have sought,¹⁸⁷⁵ and whom they have worshipped:⁷⁸¹² they shall not be gathered,⁶²² nor be buried;⁶⁹¹² they shall be for dung¹⁸²⁸ upon the face⁶⁴⁴⁰ of the earth.

³ And death⁴¹⁹⁴ shall be chosen⁹⁷⁷ rather than life²⁴¹⁶ by all the residue⁷⁶¹¹ of them that remain⁷⁶⁰⁴ of this evil⁷⁴⁵¹ family,⁴⁹⁴⁰ which remain⁷⁶⁰⁴ in all the places⁴⁷²⁵ whither I have driven⁵⁰⁸⁰ them, saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ of hosts.

⁴ Moreover thou shalt say⁵⁵⁹ unto them, Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord;³⁰⁶⁸ Shall they fall,⁵³⁰⁷ and not arise?⁶⁹⁶⁵ shall he turn away,⁷⁷²⁵ and not return?

⁵ Why then is this people⁵⁹⁷¹ of Jerusalem³³⁸⁹ slidden back⁷⁷²⁵ by a perpetual⁵³²⁹ backsliding?⁴⁸⁷⁸ they hold²³⁸⁸ fast deceit,⁸⁶⁴⁹ they refuse³⁹⁸⁵ to return.

⁶ I hearkened⁷¹⁸¹ and heard,⁸⁰⁸⁵ but they spake not aright:¹⁶⁹⁶ no man³⁷⁶ repented⁵¹⁶² him of⁵⁹²¹ his wickedness,⁷⁴⁵¹ saying,⁵⁵⁹ What have I done?⁶²¹³ every one turned⁷⁷²⁵ to his course,⁴⁷⁹⁴ as the horse⁵⁴⁸³ rusheth⁷⁸⁵⁷ into the battle.

^7C Yea, the stork²⁶²⁴ in the heaven⁸⁰⁶⁴ knoweth³⁰⁴⁵ her appointed times;⁴¹⁵⁰ and the turtle⁸⁴⁴⁹ and the crane⁵⁴⁸³ and the swallow⁵⁶⁹³ observe⁸¹⁰⁴ the time⁶²⁵⁶ of their coming;⁹³⁵ but my people⁵⁹⁷¹ know³⁰⁴⁵ not the judgment⁴⁹⁴¹ of the Lord.

^8C How do ye say,⁵⁵⁹ We are wise,²⁴⁵⁰ and the law⁸⁴⁵¹ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ is with us? Lo, certainly⁴⁰³ in vain⁸²⁶⁷ made⁶²¹³ he it; the pen⁵⁸⁴² of the scribes⁵⁶⁰⁸ is in vain.

^9C The wise²⁴⁵⁰ men are ashamed,³⁰⁰¹ they are dismayed²⁸⁶⁵ and taken:³⁹²⁰ lo, they have rejected³⁹⁸⁸ the word¹⁶⁹⁷ of the Lord;³⁰⁶⁸ and what wisdom

^10C Therefore will I give⁵⁴¹⁴ their wives⁸⁰² unto others,³¹² and their fields⁷⁷⁰⁴ to them that shall inherit³⁴²³ them: for every one from the least⁶⁹⁹⁶ even unto the greatest¹⁴¹⁹ is given¹²¹⁴ to covetousness,¹²¹⁵ from the prophet⁵⁰³⁰ even unto the priest³⁵⁴⁸ every one dealeth⁶²¹³ falsely.

^13C I will surely⁶²² consume⁵⁴⁸⁶ them, saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord:³⁰⁶⁸ there shall be no grapes⁶⁰²⁵ on the vine,¹⁶¹² nor figs⁸³⁸⁴ on the fig tree,⁸³⁸⁴ and the leaf⁵⁹²⁹ shall fade;⁵⁰³⁴ and the things that I have given⁵⁴¹⁴ them shall pass away

^14C Why do we sit still?³⁴²⁷ assemble⁶²² yourselves, and let us enter⁹³⁵ into the defenced⁴⁰¹³ cities,⁵⁸⁹² and let us be silent¹⁸²⁶ there: for the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ our God⁴³⁰ hath put us to silence,¹⁸²⁶ and given us water⁴³²⁵ of gall⁷²¹⁹ to drink,⁸²⁴⁸ because we have sinned²³⁹⁸ against the Lord.

^15C We looked⁶⁹⁶⁰ for peace,⁷⁹⁶⁵ but no good²⁸⁹⁶ came; and for a time⁶²⁵⁶ of health,⁴⁸³² and behold trouble!

^16C The snorting⁵¹⁷⁰ of his horses⁵⁴⁸³ was heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ from Dan:¹⁸³⁵ the whole land⁷⁷⁶ trembled⁷⁴⁹³ at the sound⁶⁹⁶³ of the neighing⁴⁶⁸⁴ of his strong ones;⁴⁷ for they are come,⁹³⁵ and have devoured³⁹⁸ the land,⁷⁷⁶ and all⁴³⁹³ that is in it; the city,⁵⁸⁹² and those that dwell

¹⁷ For, behold, I will send⁷⁹⁷¹ serpents,⁵¹⁷⁵ cockatrices,⁶⁸⁴⁸ among you, which will not be charmed,³⁹⁰⁸ and they shall bite⁵³⁹¹ you, saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord.

¹⁸ When I would comfort⁴⁰¹⁰ myself against sorrow,³⁰¹⁵ my heart³⁸²⁰ is faint

^19C Behold the voice⁶⁹⁶³ of the cry⁷⁷⁷⁵ of the daughter¹³²³ of my people⁵⁹⁷¹ because of them that dwell in a far⁴⁸⁰¹ country:⁷⁷⁶ Is not the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ in Zion?⁶⁷²⁶ is not her king⁴⁴²⁸ in her? Why have they provoked me to anger³⁷⁰⁷ with their graven images,⁶⁴⁵⁶ and with strange⁵²³⁶ vanities?

^20C The harvest⁷¹⁰⁵ is past,⁵⁶⁷⁴ the summer⁷⁰¹⁹ is ended,³⁶¹⁵ and we are not saved.

²¹ For the hurt⁷⁶⁶⁷ of the daughter¹³²³ of my people⁵⁹⁷¹ am I hurt;⁷⁶⁶⁵ I am black;⁶⁹³⁷ astonishment⁸⁰⁴⁷ hath taken hold

^22C Is there no balm⁶⁸⁷⁵ in Gilead;¹⁵⁶⁸ is there no physician⁷⁴⁹⁵ there? why then³⁵⁸⁸ is not the health⁷²⁴ of the daughter¹³²³ of my people⁵⁹⁷¹ recovered?

9Oh that⁵⁴¹⁴ my head⁷²¹⁸ were waters,⁴³²⁵ and mine eyes⁵⁸⁶⁹ a fountain⁴⁷²⁶ of tears,¹⁸³² that I might weep¹⁰⁵⁸ day³¹¹⁹ and night³⁹¹⁵ for the slain²⁴⁹¹ of the daughter¹³²³ of my people!

² Oh that⁵⁴¹⁴ I had in the wilderness⁴⁰⁵⁷ a lodging place⁴⁴¹¹ of wayfaring men;⁷³² that I might leave⁵⁸⁰⁰ my people,⁵⁹⁷¹ and go³²¹² from them! for they be all adulterers,⁵⁰⁰³ an assembly⁶¹¹⁶ of treacherous men.

³ And they bend¹⁸⁶⁹ their tongues³⁹⁵⁶ like their bow⁷¹⁹⁸ for lies:⁸²⁶⁷ but they are not valiant¹³⁹⁶ for the truth⁵³⁰ upon the earth;⁷⁷⁶ for they proceed³³¹⁸ from evil⁷⁴⁵¹ to evil,⁷⁴⁵¹ and they know³⁰⁴⁵ not me, saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord.

⁴ Take ye heed⁸¹⁰⁴ every one³⁷⁶ of his neighbour,⁷⁴⁵³ and trust⁹⁸² ye not in any brother:²⁵¹ for every brother²⁵¹ will utterly⁶¹¹⁷ supplant,⁶¹¹⁷ and every neighbour⁷⁴⁵³ will walk¹⁹⁸⁰ with slanders.

⁵ And they will deceive²⁰⁴⁸ every one³⁷⁶ his neighbour,⁷⁴⁵³ and will not speak¹⁶⁹⁶ the truth:⁵⁷¹ they have taught³⁹²⁵ their tongue³⁹⁵⁶ to speak¹⁶⁹⁶ lies,⁸²⁶⁷ and weary³⁸¹¹ themselves to commit iniquity.

⁶ Thine habitation³⁴²⁷ is in the midst⁸⁴³² of deceit;⁴⁸²⁰ through deceit⁴⁸²⁰ they refuse³⁹⁸⁵ to know³⁰⁴⁵ me, saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord.

⁷ Therefore thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ of hosts,⁶⁶³⁵ Behold, I will melt⁶⁸⁸⁴ them, and try⁹⁷⁴ them; for how shall I do⁶²¹³ for⁶⁴⁴⁰ the daughter¹³²³ of my people?

⁸ Their tongue³⁹⁵⁶ is as an arrow²⁶⁷¹ shot out;⁷⁸¹⁹ it speaketh¹⁶⁹⁶ deceit:⁴⁸²⁰ one speaketh¹⁶⁹⁶ peaceably⁷⁹⁶⁵ to his neighbour⁷⁴⁵³ with his mouth,⁶³¹⁰ but in heart⁷¹³⁰ he layeth⁷⁷⁶⁰ his wait.

⁹ Shall I not visit⁶⁴⁸⁵ them for these things? saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord:³⁰⁶⁸ shall not my soul⁵³¹⁵ be avenged⁵³⁵⁸ on such a nation

¹⁰ For the mountains²⁰²² will I take up⁵³⁷⁵ a weeping¹⁰⁶⁵ and wailing,⁵⁰⁹² and for the habitations⁴⁹⁹⁹ of the wilderness⁴⁰⁵⁷ a lamentation,⁷⁰¹⁵ because they are burned up,³³⁴¹ so that none³⁷⁶ can pass⁵⁶⁷⁴ through them; neither can men hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ the voice⁶⁹⁶³ of the cattle;⁴⁷³⁵ both the fowl⁵⁷⁷⁵ of the heavens⁸⁰⁶⁴ and the beast⁹²⁹ are fled;⁵⁰⁷⁴ they are gone.

¹¹ And I will make⁵⁴¹⁴ Jerusalem³³⁸⁹ heaps,¹⁵³⁰ and a den⁴⁵⁸³ of dragons;⁸⁵⁷⁷ and I will make⁵⁴¹⁴ the cities⁵⁸⁹² of Judah³⁰⁶³ desolate,⁸⁰⁷⁷ without an inhabitant.

¹² Who is the wise²⁴⁵⁰ man,³⁷⁶ that may understand⁹⁹⁵ this? and who is he to whom the mouth⁶³¹⁰ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ hath spoken,¹⁶⁹⁶ that he may declare⁵⁰⁴⁶ it, for what the land⁷⁷⁶ perisheth⁶ and is burned up³³⁴¹ like a wilderness,⁴⁰⁵⁷ that none passeth through?

¹³ And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ saith,⁵⁵⁹ Because they have forsaken⁵⁸⁰⁰ my law⁸⁴⁵¹ which I set⁵⁴¹⁴ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ them, and have not obeyed⁸⁰⁸⁵ my voice,⁶⁹⁶³ neither walked

¹⁴ But have walked³²¹² after³¹⁰ the imagination⁸³⁰⁷ of their own heart,³⁸²⁰ and after³¹⁰ Baalim,¹¹⁶⁸ which their fathers¹ taught

¹⁵ Therefore thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ of hosts,⁶⁶³⁵ the God⁴³⁰ of Israel;³⁴⁷⁸ Behold, I will feed³⁹⁸ them, even this people,⁵⁹⁷¹ with wormwood,³⁹³⁹ and give them water⁴³²⁵ of gall⁷²¹⁹ to drink.

¹⁶ I will scatter⁶³²⁷ them also among the heathen,¹⁴⁷¹ whom neither they nor their fathers¹ have known:³⁰⁴⁵ and I will send⁷⁹⁷¹ a sword²⁷¹⁹ after³¹⁰ them, till I have consumed

¹⁷ Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ of hosts,⁶⁶³⁵ Consider⁹⁹⁵ ye, and call⁷¹²¹ for the mourning women,⁶⁹⁶⁹ that they may come;⁹³⁵ and send⁷⁹⁷¹ for cunning²⁴⁵⁰ women, that they may come:

¹⁸ And let them make haste,⁴¹¹⁶ and take up⁵³⁷⁵ a wailing⁵⁰⁹² for us, that our eyes⁵⁸⁶⁹ may run down³³⁸¹ with tears,¹⁸³² and our eyelids⁶⁰⁷⁹ gush out⁵¹⁴⁰ with waters.

¹⁹ For a voice⁶⁹⁶³ of wailing⁵⁰⁹² is heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ out of Zion,⁶⁷²⁶ How are we spoiled!⁷⁷⁰³ we are greatly³⁹⁶⁶ confounded,⁹⁵⁴ because we have forsaken⁵⁸⁰⁰ the land,⁷⁷⁶ because our dwellings⁴⁹⁰⁸ have cast us out.

²⁰ Yet hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ the word¹⁶⁹⁷ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ O ye women,⁸⁰² and let your ear²⁴¹ receive³⁹⁴⁷ the word¹⁶⁹⁷ of his mouth,⁶³¹⁰ and teach³⁹²⁵ your daughters¹³²³ wailing,⁵⁰⁹² and every one⁸⁰² her neighbour⁷⁴⁶⁸ lamentation.

²¹ For death⁴¹⁹⁴ is come up⁵⁹²⁷ into our windows,²⁴⁷⁴ and is entered⁹³⁵ into our palaces,⁷⁵⁹ to cut off³⁷⁷² the children⁵⁷⁶⁸ from without,²³⁵¹ and the young men⁹⁷⁰ from the streets.

²² Speak,¹⁶⁹⁶ Thus saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ Even the carcases⁵⁰³⁸ of men¹²⁰ shall fall⁵³⁰⁷ as dung¹⁸²⁸ upon the open⁶⁴⁴⁰ field,⁷⁷⁰⁴ and as the handful⁵⁹⁹⁵ after³¹⁰ the harvestman,⁷¹¹⁴ and none shall gather

^23C Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ Let not the wise²⁴⁵⁰ man glory¹⁹⁸⁴ in his wisdom,²⁴⁵¹ neither let the mighty¹³⁶⁸ man glory¹⁹⁸⁴ in his might,¹³⁶⁹ let not the rich⁶²²³ man glory¹⁹⁸⁴ in his riches:

^24C But let him that glorieth¹⁹⁸⁴ glory¹⁹⁸⁴ in this, that he understandeth⁷⁹¹⁹ and knoweth³⁰⁴⁵ me, that I am the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ which exercise⁶²¹³ lovingkindness,²⁶¹⁷ judgment,⁴⁹⁴¹ and righteousness,⁶⁶⁶⁶ in the earth:⁷⁷⁶ for in these things I delight,²⁶⁵⁴ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord.

²⁵ Behold, the days³¹¹⁷ come,⁹³⁵ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ that I will punish⁶⁴⁸⁵ all them which are circumcised⁴¹³⁵ with the uncircumcised;

²⁶ Egypt,⁴⁷¹⁴ and Judah,³⁰⁶³ and Edom,¹²³ and the children¹¹²¹ of Ammon,⁵⁹⁸³ and Moab,⁴¹²⁴ and all that are in the utmost⁷¹¹² corners,⁶²⁸⁵ that dwell³⁴²⁷ in the wilderness:⁴⁰⁵⁷ for all these nations¹⁴⁷¹ are uncircumcised,⁶¹⁸⁹ and all the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ are uncircumcised⁶¹⁸⁹ in the heart.

10Hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ ye the word¹⁶⁹⁷ which the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ speaketh¹⁶⁹⁶ unto you, O house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Israel:

² Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ Learn³⁹²⁵ not the way¹⁸⁷⁰ of the heathen,¹⁴⁷¹ and be not dismayed²⁸⁶⁵ at the signs²²⁶ of heaven;⁸⁰⁶⁴ for the heathen¹⁴⁷¹ are dismayed²⁸⁶⁵ at them.

³ For the customs²⁷⁰⁸ of the people⁵⁹⁷¹ are vain:¹⁸⁹² for one cutteth³⁷⁷² a tree⁶⁰⁸⁶ out of the forest,³²⁹³ the work⁴⁶³⁹ of the hands³⁰²⁷ of the workman,²⁷⁹⁶ with the axe.

⁴ They deck³³⁰² it with silver³⁷⁰¹ and with gold;²⁰⁹¹ they fasten²³⁸⁸ it with nails⁴⁵⁴⁸ and with hammers,⁴⁷¹⁷ that it move

⁵ They are upright⁴⁷⁴⁹ as the palm tree,⁸⁵⁶⁰ but speak¹⁶⁹⁶ not: they must needs⁵³⁷⁵ be borne,⁵³⁷⁵ because they cannot go.⁶⁸⁰⁵ Be not afraid³³⁷² of them; for they cannot do evil,⁷⁴⁸⁹ neither also is it in them to do good.

⁶ Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O Lord;³⁰⁶⁸ thou art great,¹⁴¹⁹ and thy name⁸⁰³⁴ is great¹⁴¹⁹ in might.

⁷ Who would not fear³³⁷² thee, O King⁴⁴²⁸ of nations?¹⁴⁷¹ for to thee doth it appertain:²⁹⁶⁹ forasmuch as among all the wise²⁴⁵⁰ men of the nations,¹⁴⁷¹ and in all their kingdoms,

⁸ But they are altogether²⁵⁹ brutish¹¹⁹⁷ and foolish:³⁶⁸⁸ the stock⁶⁰⁸⁶ is a doctrine⁴¹⁴⁸ of vanities.

⁹ Silver³⁷⁰¹ spread into plates⁷⁵⁵⁴ is brought⁹³⁵ from Tarshish,⁸⁶⁵⁹ and gold²⁰⁹¹ from Uphaz,²¹⁰ the work⁴⁶³⁹ of the workman,²⁷⁹⁶ and of the hands³⁰²⁷ of the founder:⁶⁸⁸⁴ blue⁸⁵⁰⁴ and purple⁷¹³ is their clothing:³⁸³⁰ they are all the work⁴⁶³⁹ of cunning

^10C But the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ is the true⁵⁷¹ God,⁴³⁰ he is the living²⁴¹⁶ God,⁴³⁰ and an everlasting⁵⁷⁶⁹ king:⁴⁴²⁸ at his wrath⁷¹¹⁰ the earth⁷⁷⁶ shall tremble,⁷⁴⁹³ and the nations¹⁴⁷¹ shall not be able to abide³⁵⁵⁷ his indignation.

^11C Thus¹⁸³⁶ shall ye say⁵⁶⁰ unto them, The gods⁴²⁶ that have not³⁸⁰⁹ made⁵⁶⁴⁸ the heavens⁸⁰⁶⁵ and the earth,⁷⁷⁸ even they shall perish⁷ from the earth,⁷⁷² and from under⁸⁴⁶⁰ these⁴²⁹ heavens.

¹² He hath made⁶²¹³ the earth⁷⁷⁶ by his power,³⁵⁸¹ he hath established³⁵⁵⁹ the world⁸³⁹⁸ by his wisdom,²⁴⁵¹ and hath stretched out⁵¹⁸⁶ the heavens⁸⁰⁶⁴ by his discretion.

^13C When he uttereth⁵⁴¹⁴ his voice,⁶⁹⁶³ there is a multitude¹⁹⁹⁵ of waters⁴³²⁵ in the heavens,⁸⁰⁶⁴ and he causeth the vapours⁵³⁸⁷ to ascend⁵⁹²⁷ from the ends⁷⁰⁹⁷ of the earth;⁷⁷⁶ he maketh⁶²¹³ lightnings¹³⁰⁰ with rain,⁴³⁰⁶ and bringeth forth³³¹⁸ the wind⁷³⁰⁷ out of his treasures.

¹⁴ Every man¹²⁰ is brutish¹¹⁹⁷ in his knowledge:¹⁸⁴⁷ every founder⁶⁸⁸⁴ is confounded³⁰⁰¹ by the graven image:⁶⁴⁵⁹ for his molten image⁵²⁶² is falsehood,⁸²⁶⁷ and there is no breath

¹⁵ They are vanity,¹⁸⁹² and the work⁴⁶³⁹ of errors:⁸⁵⁹⁵ in the time⁶²⁵⁶ of their visitation⁶⁴⁸⁶ they shall perish.

^16C The portion²⁵⁰⁶ of Jacob³²⁹⁰ is not like them: for he is the former³³³⁵ of all things; and Israel³⁴⁷⁸ is the rod⁷⁶²⁶ of his inheritance:⁵¹⁵⁹ The Lord³⁰⁶⁸ of hosts⁶⁶³⁵ is his name.

¹⁷ Gather up⁶²² thy wares³⁶⁶⁶ out of the land,⁷⁷⁶ O inhabitant³⁴²⁷ of the fortress.

¹⁸ For thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ Behold, I will sling⁷⁰⁴⁹ out the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of the land⁷⁷⁶ at this once,⁶⁴⁷¹ and will distress⁶⁸⁸⁷ them, that they may find

¹⁹ Woe¹⁸⁸ is me for my hurt!⁷⁶⁶⁷ my wound⁴³⁴⁷ is grievous:²⁴⁷⁰ but I said,⁵⁵⁹ Truly³⁸⁹ this is a grief,²⁴⁸³ and I must bear

²⁰ My tabernacle¹⁶⁸ is spoiled,⁷⁷⁰³ and all my cords⁴³⁴⁰ are broken:⁵⁴²³ my children¹¹²¹ are gone forth³³¹⁸ of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth⁵¹⁸⁶ my tent¹⁶⁸ any more, and to set up⁶⁹⁶⁵ my curtains.

²¹ For the pastors⁷⁴⁶² are become brutish,¹¹⁹⁷ and have not sought¹⁸⁷⁵ the Lord:³⁰⁶⁸ therefore they shall not prosper,⁷⁹¹⁹ and all their flocks⁴⁸³⁰ shall be scattered.

²² Behold, the noise⁶⁹⁶³ of the bruit⁸⁰⁵² is come,⁹³⁵ and a great¹⁴¹⁹ commotion⁷⁴⁹⁴ out of the north⁶⁸²⁸ country,⁷⁷⁶ to make⁷⁷⁶⁰ the cities⁵⁸⁹² of Judah³⁰⁶³ desolate,⁸⁰⁷⁷ and a den⁴⁵⁸³ of dragons.

^23C O Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ I know³⁰⁴⁵ that the way¹⁸⁷⁰ of man¹²⁰ is not in himself: it is not in man³⁷⁶ that walketh¹⁹⁸⁰ to direct³⁵⁵⁹ his steps.

²⁴ O Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ correct³²⁵⁶ me, but with judgment;⁴⁹⁴¹ not in thine anger,⁶³⁹ lest thou bring me to nothing.

^25C Pour out⁸²¹⁰ thy fury²⁵³⁴ upon the heathen¹⁴⁷¹ that know³⁰⁴⁵ thee not, and upon the families⁴⁹⁴⁰ that call⁷¹²¹ not on thy name:⁸⁰³⁴ for they have eaten up³⁹⁸ Jacob,³²⁹⁰ and devoured³⁹⁸ him, and consumed³⁶¹⁵ him, and have made his habitation⁵¹¹⁶ desolate.

11The word¹⁶⁹⁷ that came to Jeremiah³⁴¹⁴ from the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ saying,

² Hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ ye the words¹⁶⁹⁷ of this covenant,¹²⁸⁵ and speak¹⁶⁹⁶ unto the men³⁷⁶ of Judah,³⁰⁶³ and to the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of Jerusalem;

³ And say⁵⁵⁹ thou unto them, Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ God⁴³⁰ of Israel;³⁴⁷⁸ Cursed⁷⁷⁹ be the man³⁷⁶ that obeyeth⁸⁰⁸⁵ not the words¹⁶⁹⁷ of this covenant,

⁴ Which I commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ your fathers¹ in the day³¹¹⁷ that I brought them forth³³¹⁸ out of the land⁷⁷⁶ of Egypt,⁴⁷¹⁴ from the iron¹²⁷⁰ furnace,³⁵⁶⁴ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Obey⁸⁰⁸⁵ my voice,⁶⁹⁶³ and do⁶²¹³ them, according to all which I command⁶⁶⁸⁰ you: so shall ye be my people,⁵⁹⁷¹ and I will be your God:

^5C That I may perform⁶⁹⁶⁵ the oath⁷⁶²¹ which I have sworn⁷⁶⁵⁰ unto your fathers,¹ to give⁵⁴¹⁴ them a land⁷⁷⁶ flowing²¹⁰⁰ with milk²⁴⁶¹ and honey,¹⁷⁰⁶ as it is this day.³¹¹⁷ Then answered⁶⁰³⁰ I, and said,⁵⁵⁹ So be it,⁵⁴³ O Lord.

⁶ Then the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ unto me, Proclaim⁷¹²¹ all these words¹⁶⁹⁷ in the cities⁵⁸⁹² of Judah,³⁰⁶³ and in the streets²³⁵¹ of Jerusalem,³³⁸⁹ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ ye the words¹⁶⁹⁷ of this covenant,¹²⁸⁵ and do

⁷ For I earnestly⁵⁷⁴⁹ protested⁵⁷⁴⁹ unto your fathers¹ in the day³¹¹⁷ that I brought them up⁵⁹²⁷ out of the land⁷⁷⁶ of Egypt,⁴⁷¹⁴ even unto this day,³¹¹⁷ rising early⁷⁹²⁵ and protesting,⁵⁷⁴⁹ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Obey⁸⁰⁸⁵ my voice.

⁸ Yet they obeyed⁸⁰⁸⁵ not, nor inclined⁵¹⁸⁶ their ear,²⁴¹ but walked³²¹² every one³⁷⁶ in the imagination⁸³⁰⁷ of their evil⁷⁴⁵¹ heart:³⁸²⁰ therefore I will bring⁹³⁵ upon them all the words¹⁶⁹⁷ of this covenant,¹²⁸⁵ which I commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ them to do;⁶²¹³ but they did

⁹ And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ unto me, A conspiracy⁷¹⁹⁵ is found⁴⁶⁷² among the men³⁷⁶ of Judah,³⁰⁶³ and among the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of Jerusalem.

¹⁰ They are turned back⁷⁷²⁵ to the iniquities⁵⁷⁷¹ of their forefathers,⁷²²³¹ which refused³⁹⁸⁵ to hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ my words;¹⁶⁹⁷ and they went¹⁹⁸⁰ after³¹⁰ other³¹² gods⁴³⁰ to serve⁵⁶⁴⁷ them: the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ and the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Judah³⁰⁶³ have broken⁶⁵⁶⁵ my covenant¹²⁸⁵ which I made³⁷⁷² with their fathers.

¹¹ Therefore thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ Behold, I will bring⁹³⁵ evil⁷⁴⁵¹ upon them, which they shall not be able³²⁰¹ to escape;³³¹⁸ and though they shall cry²¹⁹⁹ unto me, I will not hearken

¹² Then shall the cities⁵⁸⁹² of Judah³⁰⁶³ and inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of Jerusalem³³⁸⁹ go,¹⁹⁸⁰ and cry²¹⁹⁹ unto the gods⁴³⁰ unto whom they offer incense:⁶⁹⁹⁹ but they shall not save³⁴⁶⁷ them at all³⁴⁶⁷ in the time⁶²⁵⁶ of their trouble.

¹³ For according to the number⁴⁵⁵⁷ of thy cities⁵⁸⁹² were thy gods,⁴³⁰ O Judah;³⁰⁶³ and according to the number⁴⁵⁵⁷ of the streets²³⁵¹ of Jerusalem³³⁸⁹ have ye set up⁷⁷⁶⁰ altars⁴¹⁹⁶ to that shameful thing,¹³²² even altars⁴¹⁹⁶ to burn incense⁶⁹⁹⁹ unto Baal.

¹⁴ Therefore pray⁶⁴¹⁹ not thou for this people,⁵⁹⁷¹ neither lift up⁵³⁷⁵ a cry⁷⁴⁴⁰ or prayer⁸⁶⁰⁵ for them: for I will not hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ them in the time⁶²⁵⁶ that they cry⁷¹²¹ unto me for their trouble.

¹⁵ What hath my beloved³⁰³⁹ to do in mine house,¹⁰⁰⁴ seeing she hath wrought⁶²¹³ lewdness⁴²⁰⁹ with many,⁷²²⁷ and the holy⁶⁹⁴⁴ flesh¹³²⁰ is passed⁵⁶⁷⁴ from thee? when thou doest evil,⁷⁴⁵¹ then thou rejoicest.

^16C The Lord³⁰⁶⁸ called⁷¹²¹ thy name,⁸⁰³⁴ A green⁷⁴⁸⁸ olive tree,²¹³² fair,³³⁰³ and of goodly⁸³⁸⁹ fruit:⁶⁵²⁹ with the noise⁶⁹⁶³ of a great¹⁴¹⁹ tumult¹⁹⁹⁹ he hath kindled³³⁴¹ fire⁷⁸⁴ upon it, and the branches¹⁸⁰⁸ of it are broken.

¹⁷ For the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ of hosts,⁶⁶³⁵ that planted⁵¹⁹³ thee, hath pronounced¹⁶⁹⁶ evil⁷⁴⁵¹ against thee, for¹⁵⁵⁸ the evil⁷⁴⁵¹ of the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ and of the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Judah,³⁰⁶³ which they have done⁶²¹³ against themselves to provoke me to anger³⁷⁰⁷ in offering incense⁶⁹⁹⁹ unto Baal.

¹⁸ And the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ hath given me knowledge³⁰⁴⁵ of it, and I know³⁰⁴⁵ it: then thou shewedst⁷²⁰⁰ me their doings.

¹⁹ But I was like a lamb³⁵³² or an ox⁴⁴¹ that is brought²⁹⁸⁶ to the slaughter;²⁸⁷³ and I knew³⁰⁴⁵ not that they had devised²⁸⁰³ devices⁴²⁸⁴ against me, saying, Let us destroy⁷⁸⁴³ the tree⁶⁰⁸⁶ with the fruit³⁸⁹⁹ thereof, and let us cut him off³⁷⁷² from the land⁷⁷⁶ of the living,²⁴¹⁶ that his name⁸⁰³⁴ may be no more remembered.

²⁰ But, O Lord³⁰⁶⁸ of hosts,⁶⁶³⁵ that judgest⁸¹⁹⁹ righteously,⁶⁶⁶⁴ that triest⁹⁷⁴ the reins³⁶²⁹ and the heart,³⁸²⁰ let me see⁷²⁰⁰ thy vengeance⁵³⁶⁰ on them: for unto thee have I revealed¹⁵⁴⁰ my cause.

²¹ Therefore thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ of the men⁵⁸² of Anathoth,⁶⁰⁶⁸ that seek¹²⁴⁵ thy life,⁵³¹⁵ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Prophesy⁵⁰¹² not in the name⁸⁰³⁴ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ that thou die⁴¹⁹¹ not by our hand:

²² Therefore thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ of hosts,⁶⁶³⁵ Behold, I will punish⁶⁴⁸⁵ them: the young men⁹⁷⁰ shall die⁴¹⁹¹ by the sword;²⁷¹⁹ their sons¹¹²¹ and their daughters¹³²³ shall die⁴¹⁹¹ by famine:

²³ And there shall be no remnant⁷⁶¹¹ of them: for I will bring⁹³⁵ evil⁷⁴⁵¹ upon the men⁵⁸² of Anathoth,⁶⁰⁶⁸ even the year⁸¹⁴¹ of their visitation.

12Righteous⁶⁶⁶² art thou, O Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ when I plead⁷³⁷⁸ with thee: yet let me talk¹⁶⁹⁶ with thee of thy judgments:⁴⁹⁴¹ Wherefore doth the way¹⁸⁷⁰ of the wicked⁷⁵⁶³ prosper?⁶⁷⁴³ wherefore are all they happy⁷⁹⁵¹ that deal very⁸⁹⁹ treacherously?

² Thou hast planted⁵¹⁹³ them, yea, they have taken root:⁸³²⁷ they grow,³²¹² yea, they bring forth⁶²¹³ fruit:⁶⁵²⁹ thou art near⁷¹³⁸ in their mouth,⁶³¹⁰ and far from⁷³⁵⁰ their reins.

³ But thou, O Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ knowest³⁰⁴⁵ me: thou hast seen⁷²⁰⁰ me, and tried⁹⁷⁴ mine heart³⁸²⁰ toward thee: pull them out⁵⁴²³ like sheep⁶⁶²⁹ for the slaughter,²⁸⁷⁸ and prepare⁶⁹⁴² them for the day³¹¹⁷ of slaughter.

⁴ How long shall the land⁷⁷⁶ mourn,⁵⁶ and the herbs⁶²¹² of every field⁷⁷⁰⁴ wither,³⁰⁰¹ for the wickedness⁷⁴⁵¹ of them that dwell³⁴²⁷ therein? the beasts⁹²⁹ are consumed,⁵⁵⁹⁵ and the birds;⁵⁷⁷⁵ because they said,⁵⁵⁹ He shall not see⁷²⁰⁰ our last end.

^5C If thou hast run⁷³²³ with the footmen,⁷²⁷³ and they have wearied³⁸¹¹ thee, then how canst thou contend⁸⁴⁷⁴ with horses?⁵⁴⁸³ and if in the land⁷⁷⁶ of peace,⁷⁹⁶⁵ wherein thou trustedst,⁹⁸² they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do⁶²¹³ in the swelling¹³⁴⁷ of Jordan?

⁶ For even thy brethren,²⁵¹ and the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of thy father,¹ even they have dealt treacherously⁸⁹⁸ with thee; yea, they have called⁷¹²¹ a multitude⁴³⁹² after³¹⁰ thee: believe⁵³⁹ them not, though they speak¹⁶⁹⁶ fair words

⁷ I have forsaken⁵⁸⁰⁰ mine house,¹⁰⁰⁴ I have left⁵²⁰³ mine heritage;⁵¹⁵⁹ I have given⁵⁴¹⁴ the dearly beloved³⁰³³ of my soul⁵³¹⁵ into the hand³⁷⁰⁹ of her enemies.

⁸ Mine heritage⁵¹⁵⁹ is unto me as a lion⁷³⁸ in the forest;³²⁹³ it crieth out^54146963 against me: therefore have I hated

^9C Mine heritage⁵¹⁵⁹ is unto me as a speckled⁶⁶⁴¹ bird,⁵⁸⁶¹ the birds⁵⁸⁶¹ round about⁵⁴³⁹ are against her; come³²¹² ye, assemble⁶²² all the beasts²⁴¹⁶ of the field,⁷⁷⁰⁴ come⁸⁵⁷ to devour.

¹⁰ Many⁷²²⁷ pastors⁷⁴⁶² have destroyed⁷⁸⁴³ my vineyard,³⁷⁵⁴ they have trodden⁹⁴⁷ my portion²⁵¹³ under foot,⁹⁴⁷ they have made⁵⁴¹⁴ my pleasant²⁵³² portion²⁵¹³ a desolate⁸⁰⁷⁷ wilderness.

¹¹ They have made⁷⁷⁶⁰ it desolate,⁸⁰⁷⁶ and being desolate⁸⁰⁷⁷ it mourneth⁵⁶ unto me; the whole land⁷⁷⁶ is made desolate,⁸⁰⁷⁴ because no man³⁷⁶ layeth⁷⁷⁶⁰ it to heart.

¹² The spoilers⁷⁷⁰³ are come⁹³⁵ upon all high places⁸²⁰⁵ through the wilderness:⁴⁰⁵⁷ for the sword²⁷¹⁹ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ shall devour³⁹⁸ from the one end⁷⁰⁹⁷ of the land⁷⁷⁶ even to the other end⁷⁰⁹⁷ of the land:⁷⁷⁶ no flesh¹³²⁰ shall have peace.

¹³ They have sown²²³² wheat,²⁴⁰⁶ but shall reap⁷¹¹⁴ thorns:⁶⁹⁷⁵ they have put themselves to pain,²⁴⁷⁰ but shall not profit:³²⁷⁶ and they shall be ashamed⁹⁵⁴ of your revenues⁸³⁹³ because of the fierce²⁷⁴⁰ anger⁶³⁹ of the Lord.

¹⁴ Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ against all mine evil⁷⁴⁵¹ neighbours,⁷⁹³⁴ that touch⁵⁰⁶⁰ the inheritance⁵¹⁵⁹ which I have caused my people⁵⁹⁷¹ Israel³⁴⁷⁸ to inherit;⁵¹⁵⁷ Behold, I will pluck them out⁵⁴²⁸ of their land,¹²⁷ and pluck out⁵⁴²⁸ the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Judah³⁰⁶³ from among

^15C And it shall come to pass, after³¹⁰ that I have plucked them out⁵⁴²⁸ I will return,⁷⁷²⁵ and have compassion⁷³⁵⁵ on them, and will bring them again,⁷⁷²⁵ every man³⁷⁶ to his heritage,⁵¹⁵⁹ and every man³⁷⁶ to his land.

¹⁶ And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently³⁹²⁵ learn³⁹²⁵ the ways¹⁸⁷⁰ of my people,⁵⁹⁷¹ to swear⁷⁶⁵⁰ by my name,⁸⁰³⁴ The Lord³⁰⁶⁸ liveth;²⁴¹⁶ as they taught³⁹²⁵ my people⁵⁹⁷¹ to swear⁷⁶⁵⁰ by Baal;¹¹⁶⁸ then shall they be built¹¹²⁹ in the midst⁸⁴³² of my people.

¹⁷ But if they will not obey,⁸⁰⁸⁵ I will utterly⁵⁴²⁸ pluck up⁵⁴²⁸ and destroy⁶ that nation,¹⁴⁷¹ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord.

13Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ unto me, Go¹⁹⁸⁰ and get⁷⁰⁶⁹ thee a linen⁶⁵⁹³ girdle,²³² and put⁷⁷⁶⁰ it upon thy loins,⁴⁹⁷⁵ and put⁹³⁵ it not in water.

² So I got⁷⁰⁶⁹ a girdle²³² according to the word¹⁶⁹⁷ of the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ and put⁷⁷⁶⁰ it on my loins.

³ And the word¹⁶⁹⁷ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ came unto me the second time,⁸¹⁴⁵ saying,

⁴ Take³⁹⁴⁷ the girdle²³² that thou hast got,⁷⁰⁶⁹ which is upon thy loins,⁴⁹⁷⁵ and arise,⁶⁹⁶⁵ go³²¹² to Euphrates,⁶⁵⁷⁸ and hide²⁹³⁴ it there in a hole⁵³⁵⁷ of the rock.

^5C So I went,³²¹² and hid²⁹³⁴ it by Euphrates,⁶⁵⁷⁸ as the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ commanded

⁶ And it came to pass after⁷⁰⁹³ many⁷²²⁷ days,³¹¹⁷ that the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ unto me, Arise,⁶⁹⁶⁵ go³²¹² to Euphrates,⁶⁵⁷⁸ and take³⁹⁴⁷ the girdle²³² from thence, which I commanded⁶⁶⁸⁰ thee to hide

⁷ Then I went³²¹² to Euphrates,⁶⁵⁷⁸ and digged,²⁶⁵⁸ and took³⁹⁴⁷ the girdle²³² from the place⁴⁷²⁵ where I had hid²⁹³⁴ it: and, behold, the girdle²³² was marred,⁷⁸⁴³ it was profitable

⁸ Then the word¹⁶⁹⁷ of the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ came unto me, saying,

⁹ Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ After this manner will I mar⁷⁸⁴³ the pride¹³⁴⁷ of Judah,³⁰⁶³ and the great⁷²²⁷ pride¹³⁴⁷ of Jerusalem.

¹⁰ This evil⁷⁴⁵¹ people,⁵⁹⁷¹ which refuse³⁹⁸⁷ to hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ my words,¹⁶⁹⁷ which walk¹⁹⁸⁰ in the imagination⁸³⁰⁷ of their heart,³⁸²⁰ and walk³²¹² after³¹⁰ other³¹² gods,⁴³⁰ to serve⁵⁶⁴⁷ them, and to worship⁷⁸¹² them, shall even be as this girdle,²³² which is good

¹¹ For as the girdle²³² cleaveth¹⁶⁹² to the loins⁴⁹⁷⁵ of a man,³⁷⁶ so have I caused to cleave¹⁶⁹² unto me the whole house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ and the whole house¹⁰⁰⁴ of Judah,³⁰⁶³ saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord;³⁰⁶⁸ that they might be unto me for a people,⁵⁹⁷¹ and for a name,⁸⁰³⁴ and for a praise,⁸⁴¹⁶ and for a glory:⁸⁵⁹⁷ but they would not hear.

¹² Therefore thou shalt speak⁵⁵⁹ unto them this word;¹⁶⁹⁷ Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ God⁴³⁰ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ Every bottle⁵⁰³⁵ shall be filled⁴³⁹⁰ with wine:³¹⁹⁶ and they shall say⁵⁵⁹ unto thee, Do we not certainly³⁰⁴⁵ know³⁰⁴⁵ that every bottle⁵⁰³⁵ shall be filled⁴³⁹⁰ with wine?

¹³ Then shalt thou say⁵⁵⁹ unto them, Thus saith⁵⁵⁹ the Lord,³⁰⁶⁸ Behold, I will fill⁴³⁹⁰ all the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of this land,⁷⁷⁶ even the kings⁴⁴²⁸ that sit³⁴²⁷ upon David's¹⁷³² throne,³⁶⁷⁸ and the priests,³⁵⁴⁸ and the prophets,⁵⁰³⁰ and all the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of Jerusalem,³³⁸⁹ with drunkenness.

^14C And I will dash⁵³¹⁰ them one³⁷⁶ against another,²⁵¹ even the fathers¹ and the sons¹¹²¹ together,³¹⁶² saith⁵⁰⁰² the Lord:³⁰⁶⁸ I will not pity,²⁵⁵⁰ nor spare,²³⁴⁷ nor have mercy,⁷³⁵⁵ but destroy

¹⁵ Hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ ye, and give ear;²³⁸ be not proud:¹³⁶¹ for the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ hath spoken.

¹⁶ Give⁵⁴¹⁴ glory³⁵¹⁹ to the Lord³⁰⁶⁸ your God,⁴³⁰ before he cause darkness,²⁸²¹ and before your feet⁷²⁷² stumble⁵⁰⁶² upon the dark⁵³⁹⁹ mountains,²⁰²² and, while ye look⁶⁹⁶⁰ for light,²¹⁶ he turn⁷⁷⁶⁰ it into the shadow of death,⁶⁷⁵⁷ and make^78967896 it gross darkness.

¹⁷ But if ye will not hear⁸⁰⁸⁵ it, my soul⁵³¹⁵ shall weep¹⁰⁵⁸ in secret places⁴⁵⁶⁵ for⁶⁴⁴⁰ your pride;¹⁴⁶⁶ and mine eye⁵⁸⁶⁹ shall weep¹⁸³⁰ sore,¹⁸³⁰ and run down³³⁸¹ with tears,¹⁸³² because the Lord’s³⁰⁶⁸ flock⁵⁷³⁹ is carried away captive.

¹⁸ Say⁵⁵⁹ unto the king⁴⁴²⁸ and to the queen,¹³⁷⁷ Humble⁸²¹³ yourselves, sit down:³⁴²⁷ for your principalities⁴⁷⁶¹ shall come down,³³⁸¹ even the crown⁵⁸⁵⁰ of your glory.

¹⁹ The cities⁵⁸⁹² of the south⁵⁰⁴⁵ shall be shut up,⁵⁴⁶² and none shall open⁶⁶⁰⁵ them: Judah³⁰⁶³ shall be carried away captive¹⁵⁴⁰ all of it, it shall be wholly⁷⁹⁶⁵ carried away captive.

²⁰ Lift up⁵³⁷⁵ your eyes,⁵⁸⁶⁹ and behold⁷²⁰⁰ them that come⁹³⁵ from the north:⁶⁸²⁸ where is the flock⁵⁷³⁹ that was given⁵⁴¹⁴ thee, thy beautiful⁸⁵⁹⁷ flock?

²¹ What wilt thou say⁵⁵⁹ when he shall punish⁶⁴⁸⁵ thee? for thou hast taught³⁹²⁵ them to be captains,⁴⁴¹ and as chief⁷²¹⁸ over thee: shall not sorrows²²⁵⁶ take²⁷⁰ thee, as a woman⁸⁰² in travail?

²² And if thou say⁵⁵⁹ in thine heart,³⁸²⁴ Wherefore come⁷¹²² these things upon me? For the greatness⁷²³⁰ of thine iniquity⁵⁷⁷¹ are thy skirts⁷⁷⁵⁷ discovered,¹⁵⁴⁰ and thy heels⁶¹¹⁹ made bare.

^23C Can the Ethiopian³⁵⁶⁹ change²⁰¹⁵ his skin,⁵⁷⁸⁵ or the leopard⁵²⁴⁶ his spots?²²⁷² then may³²⁰¹ ye also do good,³¹⁹⁰ that are accustomed³⁹²⁸ to do evil.

²⁴ Therefore will I scatter⁶³²⁷ them as the stubble⁷¹⁷⁹ that passeth away⁵⁶⁷⁴ by the wind⁷³⁰⁷ of the wilderness.
